The dark mark burned under his skin. He balled his hands into fists and reluctantly answered his ‘Masters’ call. He’d had this fucking stain on his arm since he was seventeen. Dumbledore's great idea to get a spy into Voldemort’s Death Eater army. Sirius cursed the old man's name every day. He’d lost everyone he ever cared about to it. James, Effie, Monty, Peter, the girls and worst of all, Remus.
He closed his eyes, quieting his mind, building up those impenetrable barriers as he readied himself. He apparated to where he’d been called to, landing at the gate to Malfoy Manor, the wrought iron gates opening silently to allow him access.
He entered the manor, walking down the endless corridors and hallways until he walked into the ballroom. It was the largest and grandest room in the house and had been decked out lavishly for the Dark Lord. It made Sirius want to gag every time he entered it.
They were waiting for him. Voldemort’s most trusted, circling their master, heads bent low in respect. He took his place beside Regulus and bowed his head.
“You’re late,” Regulus hissed.
“Fuck off,” he hissed back.
“Welcome, my dear friends,” Voldemort declared loudly as he entered the room in a flourish of black robes. He’d waited for Sirius to arrive so he could make his grand entrance. “I have called you here to introduce you to our new member. He had proven himself many times over, working his way up from the very dregs of society and has more than earned his place among you.” He waved his arm towards the double doors that had remained open after his entrance. Sirius and the others turned as one to watch the newcomer enter the Malfoy ballroom.
His hand shot out and clutched Regulus’s wrist, as he fought to control his features and force the cold mask back into place. “May I introduce you to, Mr Remus Lupin.” Voldemort declared, and Remus moved to his side, his gaze flicking over Sirius for barely a second before he took in the other faces in the crowd.
Regulus wriggled his wrist, and Sirius immediately let go, composing himself finally. He had to be dreaming. This was his worst nightmare. “I expect you all to work together. He has hidden talents,” Sirius watched as the Death Eaters collectively stiffened as Remus let the golden eyes of Moony shine through his own, a wicked smile playing across his lips. He let out a playful growl, and Avery stumbled backwards. Voldemort opened his lipless mouth and let out that horrid, dry laugh of his. He clapped Remus on the shoulder and left the sheep to the wolf.
Sirius felt his blood chill when Remus approached him and stopped before him.
“Hello, Sirius.” Sirius felt his heart stop as he looked down at Remus’s left arm and saw the same stain embedded in his arm as was in Sirius’s.
“Remus,” he said curtly, fighting for his life to keep his mask in place when all he wanted to do was shout and scream at the man he loved, because why on earth would Remus ever choose to become something he hated so much?
Remus held out his hand for Sirius to shake, and Sirius took it. He felt the scrap of parchment move from Remus’s palm to his and surreptitiously slid it into his pocket.
After a few minutes, Sirius excused himself and found somewhere to look at the note in private.
‘There’s a spy in the Order. Meet me at the shack in an hour.
Sirius set the note alight, destroying all evidence that they had communicated. He returned to the ballroom and waited the obligatory amount of time before he could leave. It was more excruciating than ever before. He watched as Remus won over each Death Eater, even Bella was looking at him with less venom than she usually would. He waited until Remus left and waited another twenty minutes until he left, thanking Abraxas Malfoy for his hospitality. As soon as he was clear of the gates, he apparated to South London, then to the West coast and finally to the Scottish Highlands and walked the short distance to Hogsmeade under dark disillusionment charms, rendering him invisible to most onlookers.
The walk to the school took longer than he remembered, and the walk beneath the Whomping Willow even longer. Finally, he pushed the battered wooden door open to reveal Remus waiting for him in the middle of the dusty room.
“Moony,” he whispered, as the emotions he’d pushed down during the meeting escaped with such force that it left him breathless. Remus opened his arms and Sirius stumbled into them.
