Animated short films I've watched and loved recently!
Every so often I sit down and, in a desperate feverish rush, watch a bunch of animation short films on youtube -- student films, personal projects, more professionally produced stuff, whatever I happen upon and that strikes my fancy -- and I wanted to share some of the highlights for me this time around because oh my god. the GOLD that's out there waiting to be found and seen folks. it's so wild. we're living in interesting times and that sucks but at least there's animation made by people who palpably adore the medium and that's not nothing at all
Absolutely beautiful animation, and voiced in Mongolian! I could watch a whole movie in this style and still not be satisfied, just That Good Good Shit all round.
This one genuinely made me laugh so hard I cried several times. The concept itself is hilarious -- medieval nepo baby failson knight; mtv cribs/mockumentary edition -- and the execution is *chef's kiss* perfection. The animation is not the flashiest of these (which is not a dig at all b/c holy shit are you all seeing this shit???), but it doesn't have to be because the vibe is exactly correct and everything comes together so well, it might have been my fave thing to watch of the lot. uncompromisingly dedicated to its tone and concept and I admire it so much for that. CRIMINALLY underappreciated at 85K views, let's drive that up together in the name of justice!
Made me laugh the second hardest of these and has my breakout favourite character (Mr. Governor I will be thinking about you fondly for years), incredibly charming character designs and animation sensibility, STELLAR voice acting, the way the depth of the theme slowly sinks in as you go is impressive and, again, cannot emphasize this enough, SO funny and just plain fun as fuck the whole way. You can tell the animators had the time of their life with Mr. Governor prancing around. Just an utter joy.
(CW: Domestic violence and abuse, implied sexual assault, Murder. big time murder)
this one is extremely on the shortlist for the most straight up out of this world beautiful things among these and also that I've ever seen in general. It reminded me of nothing so much as The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, both in aesthetics and theme -- let that serve as an enticement or warning as you see fit lol. The view count here frankly baffles me -- is it uploaded somewhere else as well??? because this is so fucking good and the art style so iconic, it feels wild I haven't heard of it before or that it hasn't gotten more attention.
just rest your weary eyes on this why don't you. and it's like that and even more so the whole way through. unbeliveable scenes folks we love to see it.
more under the cut but let's spare some dashes before I get ahead of myself even more than I already have!
