Bears on the beach along the Sonoma Coast? A recent string of bear sightings in western Sonoma County has wildlife experts and elected officials urging people across the region to be more “bear aware.” Jenner resident Julie Gieseke was driving along Highway 1 Thursday morning when she encountered a small black bear in the middle of the roadway.

In December, Sonoma County Regional Parks trail cameras caught footage of what officials believe to be the first-ever evidence of black bear cubs at Hood Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve in Santa Rosa. And last week, in the early hours of April 29, a 430-pound, male black bear was struck and killed by a pickup truck as it walked along River Road near Forestville. Sonoma County Supervisor Lynda Hopkins, whose district encompasses the Sonoma Coast, the Russian River and other parts of west county, said she has seen more and more social media reports of local bear sightings.

While the number of sightings is concerning, that some have happened in the daytime hours — well after sunrise — in unexpected places is also notable, officials said. “More often, we hear of reports of bears seen in the evening or in a more wooded area,“ Hopkins said. ”It is definitely interesting that we seem to be encountering more bears that are utilizing the roadway and going through parking lots and other more inhabited areas with less cover.“
