I received an advanced reader copy of The Darkest Evening from Minotaur Books via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. The Darkest Evening by Ann Cleeves is a story about forgiveness, trust and family. On her way home, during a snow storm, Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope discovers an abandoned car with a toddler inside. The cell reception is very spotty, so Vera brings the child to the closest home – Brockburn, a large estate where her father grew up. Vera hasn’t been to Brockburn since she was a child but knows that her father’s family still lives there. As Vera tries to find the child’s parents, long buried Stanhope family secrets begin to reveal themselves. This was a fast, easy read, that I did not love- I didn’t like most of the characters which made it hard to see this book thru to the end. I received an advanced reader copy of The Long Call from St. Martin’s Press via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. The Long Call by Ann Cleeves is a story about the lengths people will go to to hide their secrets. Detective Matthew Venn has recently returned to the village he grew up in. Years ago, many members of the community had turned their backs on him when he didn’t accept the beliefs of a local religious sect- including his parents. Matthew’s husband, Jonathan, runs the Woodyard- a complex that offers daytime activities to adults with disabilities. A body is found on the beach; with each new piece of evidence Matthew’s past and the Woodyard become more entangled. Will Matthew and his team be able to solve this murder before there’s more bodies? This book started out slowly, but I was quickly hooked. The Last Call is available today, September 3, 2019. Very black birds?

  The first book in this fabulous series about policing in the Western Isles and remote lands of Scotland. We have very inbred and inward looking communities with very strong cultural and community ties to each other. And then we have people who like to flash the cash and appear to be party animals – perhaps to offset the boredom of living in such remote places.

If you are different from others and don’t take part in community activities you are considered suspicious here and thus we have people suspecting others with no reason other than that they are different.

How do you untangle the truth from the suspicions and mis-directions? Jimmy Perez has the job of finding out the murder/murderers

A really good detective/thriller novel with great prose [The ravens were sky-dancing] and style and of course enough suspense to keep you reading and reading and reading.
