Hello, just wanted to say I really love your blog, and how quality the content is, not just your gifs but everything you post. Also, this might be a stupid question but I’m really interested, so hey-ho. Are there any surviving letters that AW wrote to AL? I mean, I’m dying to see her actual handwriting, not just the content of it. Thanks, and sorry if you’ve already answered this.
First of all, thank you so much for your nice message :) I’m happy to read that you enjoy my content. Thank you so much, really!
And now, if you want to see AW’s handwriting you can see it in the two letters linked below in this post. One of the two letters is an actual letter AW wrote to AL, the other one is a letter AW wrote to Booth after Anne’s death (depressing, I know).
• Actual letter written by Ann Walker to Anne Lister, and written verbatim in code by Anne in her journal 12/11/1832.
• Transcription of letter from Ann Walker, Moscow, 17 Dec1840, to Booth in Halifax, shortly after Anne Lister’s death.
I would advise to follow Anne Chome on twitter because she usually posts “new stuff” about the Ann(e)s’ while she keeps on transcribing and researching. Very interesting.
If you check the West Yorkshire Archive Collection of the Shibden papers and documents, you can see that there are a lot of letters from Ann Walker to Anne Lister listed among other things.
I’ve tried to access them but it seems that they are just listed and not scanned so when you open one of them you can only see the description of the contents + the date, and not the actual document. Example:
This is why it took me so long to answer you, I’ve been trying to access the scanned documents to link you one of the actual letters but it seems that the scanned letters are not in the archive (that or I’m just missing something or doing something wrong).
If someone knows more about this, please let me know, I’d love to access the documents and read AW’s letters :)
