“A VOICE TO FALL IN LOVE WITH”
An exclusive interview with rising vocal star, Anne Geraghty
Anne, welcome to WAALM Tribune.
For those readers who will get to know you for the first time, please tell us about your background?
AG: I was born in Ottawa, Canada and grew up in the National Capital area. My mother is French-Canadian and my father of Irish-Scottish heritage. Both are music lovers with eclectic tastes in music. I quickly developed an appreciation for various musical genres in several different languages.
How you entered the world of music?
AG: From my earliest years I benefited from the music program at my school and local church which gave me a wonderful opportunity to sing Gregorian and Plain Chant as well as Polyphonic Motet. I have had the good fortune to study under two singers of international repute, Tenor Steeve Michaud (6yrs) and more recently Soprano Stephanie Beams (1yr). Yet, from my childhood to today my mother has been my daily voice teacher taking the best of what others have taught me and incorporating it into her own voice-teaching methodology. She is the inspiration behind the voice!
WAALM recently discovered you and established a collaboration between you in Ottawa and its international songwriter Mosi Dorbayani, who is based in Vancouver. How do you feel about this new network or connection? Isn't it true that music can make people get closer to one another and united?
AG: I am utterly thrilled to have been chosen to collaborate with WAALM and songwriter Mosi Dorbayani and share in the beauty of music which can be a powerful force of unity among people across the world and I hope that through this new network as wide an audience as possible can enjoy this wonderful song.
This is what Mosi wrote about you after listening to your demos: "Elegant timbre, admirable vocal tone - a voice to fall in love with" - What's your reaction on that and how did you develop such vocal quality?
AG: I am very flattered and touched by Mr. Dorbayani’s impression of my voice. Every singer can point to years of hard work, yet for me, it is the people I have been blessed to meet and work with, who have helped me achieve the voice I have today.
How did you connect with your first WAALM’s project - 'Plead of Heart', what's you feeling about it and what's your take from its words?
AG: I found the melody of ‘Plead of Heart’ beautiful, it has an ethereal quality and the constant refrain ‘give my heart a reason to sing’ resonated deeply within me. There is a note of lamentation coupled with fear of love’s loss. This is a song of love ready to undergo any hardship with and for his/her beloved. It is a joy to sing this song.
What's your musical goal and what you hope to achieve with your music?
AG: I have always loved to sing and if I can bring some comfort to people’s lives in this way, I would like to do so for many years to come.
