If you haven't had a chance to check it out yet, High Stakes and Bloody Business, the vampire anthology featuring one of my original short stories, is available for sale now. For anyone who's interested, here's a little sneak peek for you! This is the first work I've made public that's set in a world I've been writing in for a very long time now, so I'm excited but also a little nervous to put it out where everyone can see it. I hope you enjoy!

The Village By the Lake
===
The moon is high and bright overhead, wide and pale as the pearl a traveling merchant brought to market once when Vale was small.
It had been the talk of Lakebury for weeks, that pearl. Anson had teased that all they'd have to do for a pretty new bauble is sell the whole village, and then they could go north, to the city, and be grand gentlemen.
They hadn't gotten it in the end, of course. No one from their village had. It was a lavish thing, that pearl — a treasure from the distant sea.
Vale hasn't thought about it in years, but the memory of that day at market settles into his thoughts like a long-lost friend coming to call. He clings to it as he runs, a welcome distraction, pulling up every scrap of detail he can remember.
If he thinks about the rich blue fabric draped over the table of the merchant's stall, he doesn't have to concentrate on the way he stumbles barefoot across the moonlit grass. If he recalls the way Anson leaned in over his shoulder to get a better look, so close that his hair brushed Vale's cheek, he doesn't have to think too deeply about the way every clumsy step tugs at the wounds along the bare skin of his back. If he remembers the other trinkets laid out on that plush velvet, pocket watches and pendants and flowers set in glass, he doesn't have to pay attention to the searing pain that shivers through him with every indrawn breath.
He doesn't have to wonder whether that breath is even needed, anymore.
The moonlit field falls away behind him, rolling waves of grass and early spring wildflowers rimed by frost.
His feet passed cold hours ago, long since creeping into numb; he's been running without pause the whole night through, what little warmth remains to him stolen by the chill in the air. Vale suspects that there's only one reason he's gotten this far, in this weather.
He doesn't think about that, either.
As long as he keeps going, it will be fine. As long as he can make it back to Lakebury, he'll have a chance to warn them, and to rest, and to explain.
He'll have to be careful, of course; he can't go to Dame Bluff or to the village blacksmith or even home, to the empty cottage his parents once owned. He knows what everyone will think. He thought it too, just a handful of months ago.
But Anson will listen. Anson will let him come inside, and sit by the fire, and drape a blanket around his shoulders.
Anson will help him hide — help him explain. Maybe even help him find a cure.

On another note, Clif did delete his Instagram around the same time period the Denmark con took place. I have to confess something here... I'm also the same Anon who mentioned to you months ago I feel something is wrong with the timing of Clif getting his neck surgery versus how he was wearing zero neck brace at Nashcon. Anson was also in the room, who surprisingly enough was not super toxic seeming. Clif's vibes however reeked to high heaven.
I bring this up to you as I found it interesting how in one clip from ACL Anson walked with Jared and was standing with him while he was talking with fans (and walked back to the group with Jared). The way Anson was staying closer to Jared that time and the vibes I was getting at Nashcon and other things, I have been thinking Anson is low key being tested as a potential new body guard for Jared to replace Clif.
With Jared unfollowing Clif on Instagram in recent weeks after Nashville and ACL, it seems possible Clif is on his way out. He is getting older afterall, he ain't getting healthier. Thanks again...
No problem! Yeah, we all noticed that. Anson seems to be replacing Clif. He appears to be doing a much better job anyway.
