#JackedKirby - The Boy Commandos meet Batman!!! 💥💥💥 Back in the early 40s Jack and his partner Joe Simon were making a name for themselves over at DC Comics. They had the Newsboy Legion and the Guardian, The Sandman and the Boy Commandos in full swing as the country inched closer to war... a war that Jack and Joe would both be fighting in a bit later on. 💥💥💥 The Boy Commandos were quite popular around this time, so the DC brass decided to put them into one of their lead books, Detective Comics. Detective Comics has become synonymous with Batman over the years... but originally it had more of an Anthology Style. So the powers that be enlisted Simon/Kirby to include a Boy Commando story.... and even gave them some cover space to strut their stuff!!! 💥💥💥 The cover image is credited to Kirby, Simon and Jerry Robinson. If I had to guess I’d say the Kirby/Simon drew the Boys and Robinson drew Bats for the sake of artistic continuity. Then the title placards and blurbs would be added. 💥💥💥 Inside the issue the Batman story (a great one called the “ The Cop who hated Batman) appeared first, with the Commando story (Nostradamus Predicts...) coming up second. I’ve also included the opening splash of the Commando’s story to show off Kirby/Simon’s pre WWII art style... Really love the way they did these war era stories, and the art is killer!!! My brother posted up a cool #AnthologyComic I was a part of in 2006 on our shared #ComicCollection insta @off_da_wall_comics recently. It was called #WideAwake666. #Cover by @justingammon and includes a slew of other talented artists and cartoonists. My story was called "Tales To Make You Pee Your Pants", and is about Nelson, a little dude that just wants to be a #Werewolf on #Halloween. #JackedKirby - Is that a head in your hands or are you just happy to see me? Machine Man is one of Jack's coolest creations. But it isn't such a straightforward proposition. His origins come from the 2001: A Space Odyssey series. He appeared in Issues 8,9 and 10. But #Issue10 which was published in September of 1977 is by far my favorite of the bunch! Machine Man, or X-51, was the 51st version of a robot that was saved by his creator when the experiment was scrapped. He has many cool robotic powers, many of which are on full display in this issue. Him and his friends are captured by the Hades Organization and he is dismembered to render him useless to help in any rescue attempt. The Monitor is looking for something in the groups minds, but before he can find it Machine Man reassembles himself and thwarts their captors. I love the decapitated head on this cover. Kirby really captured the spirit of X-51 and his eyes in this one. And it's not just a device... it ties into the storyline extremely well!!! There are a couple of unique things about this issue. First of, he was known as Mister Machine before he was renamed Machine Man. Secondly, this is the only issue of the 2001 series that doesn't feature the Monolith... and would also be the last issue of the series that would lead to the spin off Machine Man series!!!
