Did we forget that in the first book of the Iliad she’s pleading with Zeus to side with the Trojans??? For her son??? Did we forget that in the same book, when Agamemnon pissed him off, Achilles was crying to his mother (AKA THETIS)???

since i’m feeling hateful today: i hate tsoa because of how it portrays the women in the story to make achilles and patroclus look good. the main victims of this are thetis (who was turned into this evil mother who hated seeing her son happy), and deidamia (who was turned into a whiny rapist for no reason but to cause drama in achilles and patroclus’ relationship). it also erased how achilles abused briseis, a common thing with these retellings (i.e. troy 2004, which i despise for making them a romantic couple), by instead making them have a friendly relationship when achillles murdered her family and enslaved her.

yes, tsoa shed a light on achilles and patroclus’ relationship and it explored the romance which homophobes love erasing. at the same time, though, it was unnecessarily misogynistic in the process and vilified the women.

'Troy (2004) is inaccurate!' yeah well, The Song of Achilles depicts Patroclus and Achilles, two renowned rapists as 'too gay to be rapists' and it's defended by the fans as 'the story is from Patroclus' point of view! Of course he's not gonna be talking about Achilles' wrongdoings!' as if two characters in their setting would ever consider that rape is wrong - and mind you, it's not just Madeline Miller overlooking that aspect of their characters, she very explicitly writes a scene to prove that they aren't evil rapists because they're gay! As though Achilles wasn't raping young boys, as though rape is about attraction and not control.
