I've seen a bunch of "fandom etiquette" posts on my dash today and I'm going to say something that is maybe going to be unpopular but;

The absolutely pervasive mentality that unwanted criticism or critique shouldn't be given and should be ignored is why fans of color don't stay in fan spaces.

And I am not going to mince words here:

A lot of you are racist. A lot of your fan works are racist.

That might have been difficult to hear. And if it was, you should probably reflect on why that was.

"Fandom etiquette" has created a space where fans of color either bite our tongues and eventually leave or say something, get dogged on, and then eventually leave.

So much of "fandom etiquette" seems to be about insulating creatives from Feeling Bad and hostility to any kind of negative feedback is a pretty big contributor to why bigotry festers in these spaces.

#imo the potluck analogy applies- it would be rude to critique someone's icing technique at a potluck bc it wasn't as good as at the bakery #but if they had decorated their cupcakes w hate symbols it wouldn't be rude to tell them that's gross and gtfo #in fact it would be inappropriate to NOT say anything in that situation #or to complain that another guest who did point it out was 'ruining everyone's potluck' #and pointing out racism in fan works is 100% the second thing not the first! I decided to pretend that my dark gods Nico in my 'Into the Nicoverse' stuff is somehow allowed to be in the Pomegranate Prince AU Nico's realm of the Lost (which is hinging on being canon and not canon in that AU) because I decided his ending is too bleak (even if I don't work on the Dark Gods AU anymore)

And then proceeded to imagine them forming an unhealthy bond with each other😭 Pom Nico wants to save his younger self (their situations are so much similar) and Niccolo (Dark gods AU) just lost his dad and is attaching himself to the closest dad shaped person.

INTO THE NICOVERSE

William (Dark gods AU) thought that with Hades gone, Niccolo would be able to heal but no😭

Sunshine (Pom AU Will, named that way cus that's what Pom Nico calls him) thought that his husband had healed. Nah, he pulls up with a younger more traumatized version of himself babbling about saving himself.

Niccolo (dark gods Nico) called Pom Nico 'papa' once and neither of them talk about it.

i think it's funny when a character is almost exclusively referred to by their last name by other people and this carries over into their internal monologue when someone writes from their pov. not even on a first name basis with herself

Im choosing to believe that after the Into the Nicoverse (my Nico AUs meet) stuff Niccolò can access Pom's somewhat non-canon (haven't decided if it's gonna be in the Pom AU) realm of the lost and can be comforted there.

Because while my Dark gods AU is more or less discontinued before the 1st draft got even finished, the ending I had planned for it was dark as fuck.

In short, Hypnos puts the dark gods in a coma and the AU ends with the remaining gods and demigods coming out of the woodworks and taking over for them. Which is all well and good for some but not for the people who actually did love the dark gods despite their insanity and now have to live in half empty homes and grieve someone who are still alive.

Also Niccolò genuinely NEEDS someone that isn't Will or Persephone because he might genuinely become a mania atp😭

Tho there is a much more fun path with that — he can also form an unhealthy attachment to Pom because all Nico variants look like their dad.
