eveleech replied to your post “Noctluna is synonymous to Clerith for me, which is why it absolutely...”
Yeah, Cloti doesn't have much similarities to Noctluna besides the superficial "childhood friends" and "childhood promise" thing.
Even that title of “childhood friends” is a bit of a stretch. Cloud and Tifa had only one conversation, iirc. Tifa only started to pay attention to Cloud after he told her of his plan to go into SOLDIER, at which point she made him promise to save her whenever she was in trouble. Cloud forgot that promise, and when they met again, he was very rude to her.
Whereas for Noctluna, we see how they became friends when they were children, and they kept in touch throughout the years even if miles separated them. Their arranged marriage was even welcomed by both, showing how much they want to be together.
So, I don’t understand how fans can accept NoctLuna then deny Clerith when these two ships are the ones with so much similarities, while they push for C/loti and claim parallels.
Maybe it’s just because of preference, sure. I still don’t get it though.
And maybe I never will.
Quall’s Starry Sky and Cloti’s Starry Sky
While I noticed that the FF franchise is fond of using stars and the night sky for its romances but it has also been used for non-couples to share feelings or speak about important events.
When Cloud was young, he had a crush on Tifa and to be noticed by her he declared to him that he would join Soldier. Impressed by this, Tifa asked him to promise her to help him whenever she’s in a pinch, after repeatedly saying what and stalling Cloud finally agrees and holds his promise. This scene does not sound romantic because Tifa did not really pay attention to Cloud until he talked about becoming famous like Sephiroth. Also Tifa wanted Cloud to be a hero which is why she forced him into the promise, while all the other couples agree to it easily or the guys suggest it as is the case with Squall/Rinoa, Zack/Aeris, Tidus/Yuna, and Snow/Serah.
Examine the dialogue:
Cloud and Tifa
Tifa: Hey, why don’t we make a promise? Umm, if you get really famous and I’m ever in a bind…… You came save me, all right? Cloud: What? Tifa: Whenever I’m in trouble, my hero will come and rescue me. I want to at least experience that once. Cloud: What? Tifa: Come on—! Promise me——! Cloud: All right…… I promise.
The scene is like this:
That night the stars were gorgeous. It was just Cloud and I. We talked at the well…
-Tifa
A shooting star appeared at the end of the scene.
While a shooting star normally suggests romance, all it means is that Cloud will later does save Tifa, which he does. In earlier titles of the Compilation of FF7 (Before Crisis and Crisis Core), he values the promise greatly. However, by the time FF7 has its storyline, Cloud is cool and arguably cold as well as standoffish to her in non-optional scenes and says he is not famous and can not keep the promise before trying to leave her bar. Also as we later learn in the Lifestream sequence, Cloud and Tifa were not close and not childhood friends. Tifa was not mean to Cloud, but she just ignored him as she had the other group of friends that excluded Cloud. Also Cloud was humiliated by his perception of failure to save Tifa from her bridge accident that caused her to be in a coma for a week so he felt she hated him (which she did not).
Squall and Quistis
Quistis calls Squall to reveal that she was fired as SeeD instructor and hoped for some moral support from Squall (who acts very ungentlemenly by not only rebuffing her advances but he tells her to talk to a wall rather than him.) Squall clearly has no romantic interest in Quistis and never flirts back or sees her as anything other than what she is, his teacher.
Vaan and Ashelia
Vaan reveals to Ashe that he, too, can see Lord Rasler's ghost, though he thinks it looks like his brother. Ashe is shown clearly still pining over Rasler in her scene at night. Vaan eventually ends up with Penelo in canon, at the end of Revenant Wings. This night scene between Vaan and Ashe, does take place on a starry night, but while these two bond as friends and learn more about each other, it's nothing more. They talk about Vaan's brother and revenge and of course Vaan's reasons for working with Ashe. The two of them clearly hold a friendship developing in this scene, but nothing more.
Hope and Nora
Hope and his mother Nora are shown watching fireworks together in Final Fantasy XIII on a starry night. Nora is Hope's mother, and though he loves her, it is clearly not in a romantic sense. They bond as mother and son would, but this is another starry night that the romance was not shown under.
RikuNami shippers: “Oh boy we sure do love staying in our lane and not invading SoNami posts to post RikuNami fanart where it doesn’t belong like a certain group of ship fans or two.”
Cloti and Zerith shippers: “CLOTI AND ZERITH FOREVER! AERITH SHOULD BE DIMNISHED INTO NOTHING MORE THAN AN EXTENSION OF ZACK AND CLOUD IS ACTUALLY IN LOVE WITH TIFA! NOW LET US POST FANART OF THE TWO AFOREMENTIONED PAIRINGS ON CLERITH POSTS BECAUSE SCREW RESPECTING CLERITH FANS!”
This just in, Clotis still delusional.
00tlink said: cloti.. canon… Do i laugh or cry. but yeah I agree on cloud and tifa, especially the “what is it, a memory or us?” line cloud got from tifa still makes me a bit bitter tbh and just.. its far from how their relationship in the original game has been
haithuong313 said: @ruebird: I think you are right about Cloti - they’re better being siblings. However, don’t let the AD movie give you wrong ideas - in the original game Tifa knew her place and treated Cloud as best friend, what made their bond as strong as Clerith’s
like i didn't just get bad vibes from AC/C either??? there's numerous instances in the novellas where tifa refers herself as a motherly figure for cloud and himself as a child-- and not only is that a sorta shitty way to think of your best friend who's been quite literally traumatized and has gone through more than enough horrors for a single lifetime and is showing numerous signs of heavy PTSD, but definitely seems more platonic than romantic.
also in the original game there's been times where i've sorta squinted at her too. like tifa allowing cloud to continue his retelling of the nibelheim events without claiming that it was incorrect? she must have known something was up. even just pulling him to the side afterwards to talk it over with him or at least attempt to understand what was going through his head at that point would have been better than keeping silent, i think-- remaining mute about it until he discovers something's wrong through sephiroth and hojo instead absolutely did not do him any favors; especially since he was further manipulated to believe more lies due to his confusion.
i'll accept that cloud had a puppy crush as a child, but i have no doubt that any kind of crush would have been shoved to the very back of his mind (if not killed completely) during the trauma he went through via the nibelheim event and the labs and the brain scramble he suffered from afterwards. i can accept that tifa may have romantic feelings for him during the og and even further than that-- but they just dont mesh for me??? she's definitely supportive, but sometimes she goes about it the wrong way and appears to have limited patience when it comes to 'dealing' with him.
s o.
howEVER BEsides the points mentioned, they did have a very strong bond in the og, which i can definitely see and appreciate. their bond is one of the most powerful ones in the game, and i can't dismiss that. i just prefer to see it as platonic! best friends. sibling vibes. people who would do anything for each other without needing a kiss to seal the deal.
Three Quotes from Square Enix
Three times, the Ultimania's say that Tifa's affection rating with Cloud can change during the course of the game.
1) “After stopping Hojo from going amuck, the conversation with Tifa before they rush into the Northern Crater diverges into two conditions, according to Tifa’s affection rating with Cloud. When it gets low, the conversation in the scene that they spend the night will be apathetic and ends short. Next morning in the cockpit, Tifa says “Were you listening?” and stamps on tiptoe. On the other hand, when degree gets higher, the conversation of the scene that they spend the night will have strong emotions. Next morning in the cockpit, Tifa will say “Were you watching?” and feels terribly shy” ~page 198, Final Fantasy VII Ultimania Omega
2) “Deviation – Two versions of the conversation before the final battle Prior to the final battle, the contents of the conversation between Cloud and Tifa can change depending on the degree of Tifa’s affection. If the degree of affection is high, the contents of the two’s conversation will involve deep subject matter and strong feelings for each other. As well, the sight of the two seen by their companions the next morning will lead to an embarrassing scene for Tifa, and she blushes greatly.” ~page 232, Final Fantasy 20th Anniversary Ultimania
3) “Another event is when the party was dismissed and after everyone left for their own places separately, Cloud and Tifa spent the night together. At that moment, according to Tifa’s affection rating with Cloud, the event of “dialogues exchanged between them from dusk to dawn” and “Tifa’s reaction and lines when she found out that everyone might see (or hear) that circumstance” will be different.” ~FFVII Dismantled, page 201
Since Tifa's affection rating with Cloud can change during the course of the game, then there is no "canon" way for Cloud to feel about Tifa at the end of the game.
Oh! One more thing to piss off these asshats (Clotis). Bwahahahaah! (I make no claims to the comic. It belongs to Sandra-delalglesia from Deviantart)
