I think we can only dislodge Harry Potter from the cultural consciousness if we have a replacement for the house system as a personality type thing. So I propose the Cahill family Branches from 39 Clues (also the author Rick Riordan who wrote the plot outline for the first series is pro-trans, I don’t know about the rest of the authors). Every piece of House merch could be Branch merch, you got two colors (the secondary color is white for all of them), an animal, and a seal. The Branches are as follow:
Ekaterina/Ekat: Scientists and inventors. Yellow-orange and a dragon.
Janus: Artists. Green and a wolf.
Lucian: Leaders and spies. Basically what people who say they’re Slytherin mean. Red and two snakes over a dagger.
Tomas: Athletes, explores, and warriors. Blue and a polar bear.
There’s a secret 5th branch, but it doesn’t have the same kind of traits. These branches were created intentionally to have a personality type gimmick, but when you created your account for the old 39 Clues website, you couldn’t choose the secret branch. So the main 4 should be the replacements. There isn’t an evil one, they’re all equally assholes. The gimmick is that almost all major historical figures are part of the Cahill family, and while the books can’t get into how most historical figures were bad people, it’s achieved thematically by having the most of the modern Cahill family be antagonists.
tumblr mobile will you grasp the concept that i don’t wanna see advertisement for the fucking magic school saga from hell or is it asking too much
this post is incredibly critical of harry potter, drarry, and draco/hermione as well as midorya/bakugo (my hero academia) and reylo. you’ve been warned!
i’ve felt for a long time that drarry was kind of. a bad ship. but it only just clicked for me this morning that most ppl hc harry as indian and then ship him with a literal white supremacist allegory,,,, it’s hm. obligatory “they were kids and draco was groomed into being that way” but if harry can grow up and save the world then draco could have realized along the way that he was spoiled, bigoted, and a bully so being a minor at the time doesn’t erase the harm he did to harry. like........... you really shouldn’t ship people with the victim of their torment. i would have thought we would be clear enough on this now.
i feel like harry potter is responsible for a lot of pro-ship bullshit that permeates fandom spaces nowadays, with things like drarry and dramione (which, let’s face it, is the m/f version of drarry) leading to things like midorya/bakugo, reylo, etc. i can draw a direct line from some ppl who are in my age bracket and a little older than me shipping draco with any of the main three and then shipping thingslike midorya and bakugo and reylo. to a certain extent i think zutara (the more toxic version of that ship, at least (bc there’s two versions in my head, both problematic, but one worse than the other, but i won’t get into that now)) is also responsible.
idk i guess this just means to not interact with me if you ship drarry or dramione lmao
So jkr is problematic
Stephanie Meyer is problematic
Sarah j mass is problematic
The last airbender is problematic
What do we do now?
It’s pretty simple.
1. Understand the issues at hand.
2. Don’t recommend JKR, Meyer and others to people you know
3. Find other content creators to support.
I’ve said this before but I’m not going to fault people for still loving HP. Just be aware that JKR is a terrible person and she added a lot of bigotry to her writing. I’m fine with people still being in HP as long as they’re actively aware of what they’re consuming and not singing its praises. That’s the problem. Most of my friends who still love HP don’t support it anymore. They don’t buy the books, watch the movies legally or purchase merchandise that can supports JKR.
It’s not too hard too but it’ll take time to become second nature to you.
Is it just me or do people just not understand that you can like something that’s imperfect without defending it?
I’ll admit, I used to be guilty of this but like just because you like something doesn’t mean it’s perfect.
The reason I wasn’t able to mess with a lot of Harry Potter fans is because so many of them just flat out refused to look at HP critically. Even now, with JK Rowling outing herself as a transphobe, I still see people desperate to defend her books with their last dying breathe. Guys, you can still like the book/movies and have fond memories of it but you have to stop acting like it’s perfect.
“But it helped me during a hard time.” Okay, great! You still need to look at it critically.
“But it’s my special interest!” Good, look at it critically
“But...” NO BUTS, JUST LOOK AT THE DAMN THING CRITCALLY.
Being critical is a good thing, trust me. It’s not that hard and it doesn’t mean you’re less of a fan. Blindly worshiping any piece of media is dangerous and should be avoided.
There was a tweet on my feed that said 'how to murder harry potter' and the first thing i thought was' this tweet has lavi's attitude towards hatt potter
............... admittedly idc about the character but if we’re discussing the franchise or the fandom discourse I 100% am interested in knowing how I can possibly achieve that result ;) ;)
