I post this same photo every year on my facebook. In the hope that a time will come when people will hopefully be looking back in shock and saying “was it really like that back then?” Stamp Out Prejudice Hatred Intolerance Everywhere. #stophate #weareonepeople #antiracist #antihomophobic #antisexism #antitransphobic #antihate #antibullying #blacklivesmatter #alllivesmatter #positivevibes #positiveenergy #positivewaves (at Birmingham, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CA6IYWApXxp/?igshid=e0v9dgecjj25
Acting in Concert
It is taking courses like the one we are taking that help us wake up. Growing up, you experience things that confuse you, that make you feel uncomfortable, that make you think, “is this really how things are supposed to be?” But because you are young, a product of your environment and the parenting style you are brought up in, you don’t question it too deeply. Until you are in college, taking classes that hit you head on with a newsflash: YOUR INSTICTS WERE RIGHT ALL THOSE TIMES YOU FELT IT BACK THEN. THAT REALLY IS NOT HOW THINGS SHOULD BE. I will always recall the Human Sexuality course I took my first year of college, the beginning of my exploration of gender and sexuality. That was the first time in my life that I had ever heard the words: “GENDER. IS. NOT. REAL.”
The moment the professor spoke those words, I felt so many memories, so many questions, and so many worries finally clicking into place. A lot in my life made more sense now, especially the astounding realization of just how much gender controls all our lives; our entire society. The realization of just how much we all are “Acting in Concert”. The Introduction to Judith Butler’s “Undoing Gender” dives deep into the question of “What does gender want?” and the notion of undoing the constraining and segregating nature that gender holds over us today. Are any of us actually “ourselves”? If gender is so ingrained in how we act, react, think, and blink, how can we truly be the authors of our own identity? It seems that we are not the owners nor sole creators of what we identify as our gender, but rather co-authors with the rest of society’s expectations and normative restrictions.
But it is not all in a negative light. As Butler points out, those who know they do not fit in the categorizations that control our lives rely on institutions of social support to truly exercise their self-autonomy and self-exploration. The understanding of gender and the inclusivity of the broad spectrum that is gender needs to be integrated not in just the minds of allies and supporters, but also needs to be integrated deep into politics, health and awareness initiatives, social categorizations, and the acceptance of the variety of bodies that exist in humanity. This can only happen if the critique of gender norms and anatomical essentialism change in a way that accepts and allows people of different, backgrounds, races, and classes to find their way of living a live that is to their benefit based on their experiences without classifying them as “less human”.

"I was taught that God loved all His creation. Not just the straight kids, not just the white kids, not just the upper class twats; everyone. And that includes the people that He made gay, the people whose lives he may have destroyed by giving them a homophobic family, or friends, or school, or state. Because He can’t say ‘I love you all’, then turn around at the last minute and tell you that you are sinful because He made you the way you are."
