Jealousy

{A Butterly and a Cub Series}

Antonio never really had to share Mirabel’s attention before.

Antonio was a little… upset, if he was to be honest. It felt like everyone wanted Mirabel’s attention these days. She was almost always being called away by someone.

And it’s fine, y’know, cause it happened before too. With the townspeople or when they were playing with the kids that weren’t surrounding Camilo to see his gift in action. But…

Now the entire family is doing it too. Whenever Mirabel goes to play with him, “Mirabel, Mirabel!” Camilo and Luisa shout and drag her away.

“Mirabel, Mirabel,” can be heard from Abuela and Tío Bruno as she and Antonio are about to get to the best part of the story.

Mirabel, mirabel, miraaaaabbbbeeeeeeellll. From her parents to his to Dolores to Isabella and she’s right there but not!

All he wants is to play with his Mira again. Mama and Papa try but they don’t do the voices right or follow all the rules and it’s not fair! He thought that they were super close, so close that they’d always be together!

But it’s okay! Really! Mirabel always wanted everyone to be together and talk and it’s okay cause it’s all fine-

‘What’s wrong, Cub?’ Hiro spoke up. Okay, so maybe it’s not and he’s upset.

”Nothing! I just… I want Mirabel to spend as much time with me as she used to.” The other animals crowd around. “And… and I love that our familia is spending more time with her…”

‘But?’

“Where were they before?” He cries out. “Where were they before Casita fell and everyone other then Tío and Tía and I were ignoring her? When my Mira was angry or sad or hurt? What about the stories she told me when Mama forgot she promised because she had to do sooooo much!”

“What about when I’d fall and get hurt how Mirabel would calm me down and get me an arepa? She's been there for so much! And…” He can't remember when he started crying but he was now. “And what if she leaves me all alone? What if she decides she likes spending her time with them 'cause they’re older!”

“Tonito.” Arms wrap around him. It's a familiar voice and weight. He calls out ‘Mira.’ She hugs him until his crying stops and the animals join in.

Once he's no longer sobbing, she asks if he can look at her. He doesn't want to and she waits until he's ready.

“Antonio.” She’s calm as she states his name. Her voice is soothing and he almost immediately relaxes into her arms. “I would never leave you. Hey hey hey,” She quickly gets out when he starts looking away. “I'm not lying. I swear it to you.”

Mira never breaks her promises. She never has. At least, not as far as he knows.

“Things have been different now, I know, but we need to work with it. We've all got a lot on our plates.” He knows. He does! Antonio just can't help the bad feelings about it. “But that doesn't mean I shouldn't have spent some more time with you?”

“What? Mirabel no! You keep getting called off and have so much to do-” He doesn't even know what he says next but Mirabel lets him continue on.

“Thats still not an excuse Tonito. I should have said no and spent some time with you.” She smiles gently at him, looking up Antonio can still sense she’s hiding something. “We spent a lot of time together and to have it suddenly stop? It must have been jarring. To see me spend it all that time with others must have hurt. I'm sorry.” Tears start coming out again.

She holds him until he's done. The animals have all gathered around and some even started nuzzling them.

“How about, the rest of today we spend playing together, huh?” Mirabel asks and he nods. He’d really like that. “Well then, I know this fantastic tree house bedroom we can play in?” He giggles.

They play lots of games and Mirabel reads him three stories, THREE, when she tucks him in that night.

After she leaves Antonio, Dolores corners her. It's fine. Mirabel knew it was coming.

“Is that how you felt?” Her cousin asks.

“Yes.” There isn't anything else she can say. Not yet at least. But her ceremony still haunts her. Her sisters, her cousins all went from spending every day playing with her or taking her with them to avoiding her like a plague did hurt.

It hurt a lot.

It made her feel horrible. As if she had done something wrong. Seeing them with the villagers or each other and laughing but pushing her away? She couldn't help it. She spent so much time trying to be better- to fix herself.

She won't be the one to make Antonio feel that way. Not if she can help it.

“Mirabel…” Dolores whispers. “I’m sorry.” Unlike Antonio, she doesn't cry. She does however flash her cousin a grin and tell her it's okay. Her cousin leaves and Casita closes the door behind.

“Buenas noches, Casita.” She calls out and hears the tiles tap out a response.

Villain Antonio???? Plez???

This is haunting me. It took so long to figure out what his reason would be and I realized if we lean heavily into pre-movie mama Mira headcanon, we really only need to start with a change at one scene.

If You Are Good

Antonio had come out of his room when Hiro told him that he heard Mira and Isabela come back. He had known that Abuela was looking for Mira but he didn't know what she wanted. He did know that Mira was trying to fix things.

All the animals kept talking to him. Telling him everything they knew. From Bruno being in the walls to his mom Pepa and Abuela having fought about what to use his gift for.

He loves his mom! He thinks. It's... Well, it's hard to say. How well can someone love what's essentially a stranger in his house? Antonio knows that's not what they all meant to have done but… the village came first. Abuela’s orders came first.

Except with Mira. He remembers when she'd break the rules and sneak him snacks or bandage his wounds or when she spent the whole day by his side while he was sick. She'd gotten in trouble for not helping pass out things or something.

It was funny. His Mira got in trouble for helping and for not helping.

“The cracks started with you.” He hears from his abeula and he feels cold. He looks down from his spot on the second floor and he doesn't need to see his Mira’s face to know she's hurt. Hiro growls and the others give out chirps and squeaks and more as they get upset on Mira’s behalf.

“Bruno left because of you. Luisa’s losing her powers,” Which isn't true! Bruno chose to leave to protect her! The rats said so. Earlier Dave the donkey said that he agreed with Mira and that Luisa deserved a break.

Barry is the one who comes up with the idea.

“Isabela’s out of control,” Flowers was out of control now? Antonio hears from some of the birds. He kind of agrees. Her having fun was out of line? “Because of you!” There's a bad feeling that feels like it's consuming him. He feels like he's on fire and covered in ice at the same time. Like he's gotten hundreds of paper cuts all at once.

He decides to do what Barry suggests. In a matter of moments, he and the animals are making their way up. Everyone else is focused on Abuela’s yelling at his Mira once again so they don't see him climbing.

“I don’t know why you weren’t given a gift,” Because his Mira, his Mami was perfect already. She was kind and caring. He'd always thought of her as good, as what good was supposed to be. “But it is not an excuse for you to hurt this family!” Now he knows he's the only one to think this way.

The walls are shaking. The animals say it's cause of the cracking.

There's a candle on a plate. It sits atop a windowsill to decide your gift and change your fate. He hears in his head. Something his Mira told him for as long as he could remember. Especially when he was feeling bad or scared. Well, in that impossible scenario, you’d stay here in the nursery with me.

He sees the candle. He doesn't hesitate to grab it.

“Don’t you ever- Antonio?” He turns around, candle in hand. They all start calling out to him but he focuses only on Mira.

And the hurt. The pain and fear, the doneness in her eyes when she first turns around are what does it. Even as it changes to concern and worry for him, he knows it was there.

If being good like the others will make him hurt his Mira for Abuela, if being good is what they are… he doesn't want it. Barry’s right.

If they're gonna call Mirabel bad then he’ll just have to show them what bad truly is.

He blows.

And

Everything

Crumbles.

I Am My Own Home

He could never understand. His mom and dad loved him, so did his primas, Tío- he didnt remember Bruno much beyond memories of a figure with rats- and his Tía. Even before he got his gift and especially so after Mirabel failed to get hers, Dolores kept avoiding him.

It’s literally only Dolores too. He’s played games with Mariano and Mirabel and Antonio. They greet him and talk just like everyone else! Except- they don’t always want him to change!

Well after he apologized for being mean to Mirabel first. Mariano said that only good kids could do so. How was Mirabel good when she was a sister-stealer? So he did and they were fun and it was nice.

Also, if supposedly she doesn’t like him, why would she protect him? Why? Why was it her who stopped what was apparently wrong- why was that the only time he meant enough to her for her to be near him?

It made no sense. However, he can see. He sees the differences between like with their mom and dad.

They were different with Dolores. At least with Antonio, they would still ask him how he was or check that he was okay. Same with himself. Even if he used to be around them more and it felt like they were going to leave him. They rarely did that with his sister.

Even before Abuela increased the workload.

He asked once.

“It’s just…. We… it’s hard to explain hijo. We made mistakes that we can’t take back.” Which again, he doesn’t fully understand. How does that relate to asking about her day? How does that relate to her avoiding me? He wants to ask but the words never come out.

Tonito can speak to animals!!! Whooo!!!! The miracles are back, baby!

Camilo rides that high until Enrique, one of Isabella’s friends, asks to hangout just the two of them. He goes with. His job is to make people smile, after all.

He ends up punching him in the face. He won’t get scolded because then he’ll tell everyone what Enrique wanted. And what was that? He wanted Camilo to shift into Sofia and show him what she looks like.

And then, as he’s on his way back to the party- neverbealonewithEnriqueagain, mustwarnSofia- he crashes into someone.

“Ah! I’m sorry I wasn’t-.” And there she is.

Dolores.

“No! No ah, uhm I’m sorry.” Camilo stammers, like a moron. She stares at him. “So, how’s the… party?” He trails off as a strange sound appears and it happens again and again and when he looks, cracks are moving all over the roof and floors and walls and the candle. But then it stops, it disappears like nothing happened.

He looks over at Dolores and sees her face. It’s strange but it’s filled with relief and… regret? Their eyes lock.

”Don’t. Tell. Abuela.” She growls out. “I’ve got to go.” She goes back in the direction of the party… probably to find Mirabel.

If he were giftless too, would she love him than?

He’s getting really sad isn’t he. Well, Dolores only said he couldn’t tell Abuela, right?

So, he has to go to the most trustworthy person in all of Encanto!

”Hey Luisa!”

Mirabel grasps at her chest, in what feels like a distant memory but she knows is not she watches her cousins interaction. She watches as she’s breaking.

She gasps as she recollects herself, looking around to make sure no one was watching. She smiles again and goes to dance with Antonio while Mariano and Isabela play their roles as fiancés for a bit.

She not-sees Camilo enter the party and guides Bruno to the kitchen for leftover with her tiles and panels. Nice uncle Bruno who patches her. When he gets there there’s a full container for him to take.

Mariano comes back and asks what she wants.

All she wants is for her family to be okay.

“Some punch would be nice.” Is all she says.
