Rewatching Absolution
For all its somewhat heavy-handed bloodthirstiness, Season 3 definitely subverted expectations when it comes to its conclusion. Not with Lincoln, of course, whose fate was sealed (especially in retrospect) the minute Daisy told him her vision, but with Miss Johnson herself.
The superhero of the piece won’t regain her sense of self and purpose saving the day in a triumphant battle against the Big Bad, which could have been a satisfying if conventional resolution for the misery she’s been subjected to.
Quite the contrary. First, she surrenders to the villain and to the mother of all withdrawals. Then she’ll fight him and fail. And finally, her self-sacrificing play will be hijacked, driving her to leave everything behind.
Honestly, I wouldn’t have minded the triumphant saving the day one bit but what we’ve got is a baller writing move and the show is probably better for it.
Choosing to return to the oblivion of the sway is by far Daisy’s lowest moment, her one and only true betrayal, firstly of herself, then of Lash, who died to free her, and then everyone else, since the consequences would have been apocalyptically bad. I mean, it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which S.H.I.E.L.D. succeeds if Daisy is backing Hive.
Of course the show will never bring it up again past this season😏 If you’d start watching from S4, you’d think all that happened to turn her goth grunge and brood-y was her boyfriend’s death.
Lincoln will of course figure it out next episode but did she ever tell anyone? Given how most characters won’t seem to understand how terrified she was of bringing them harm, I’m going to assume she didn’t.
Mack Therapy:
Jemma goes for clinical detachment, Coulson tries it and can’t sustain it, so switches to reason (“no one blames you for this [...] you were brainwashed”), but Daisy can’t be receptive to either approach right now: she thinks she deserves much worse than coldness and is drowning in self-loathing.
Mack can’t fake dispassionate and doesn’t try to convince her of what she is currently incapable to accept, that she’s the victim, not the perpetrator. He just gives her forgiveness and unconditional friendship. With time, no impending doom and no proximity to Hive as a walking quick fix, I’m convinced the Mack Way would have truly helped Daisy fight out of her funk.
In any case, regardless of the final outcome, their partnership, set up in 2x22, pays off beautifully.
Stuff that crossed my mind:
In Daisy’s nightmare, the entire Earth is dead and Coulson is dying. Hello, Season 5. I wasn’t missing you. 😈😁
If anyone had somehow forgotten that May is a kickass pilot, here she flies a Quinjet underwater. I mean... 😍
They only send you. Why? It’s because you’re the only one I didn’t hurt...personally, I mean. That’s why. Oh, baby...😭
And of course Fitz does a monkey impression to test his awesome green screen trickery. If he doesn’t have a monkey companion while playing Time Lord in S7 I’m going to be so pissed...
Am I the only one who is a bit concerned that to obtain nuclear missiles codes in the Marvel Universe all you need is two generals asking, one undersecretary agreeing and another guy with a (fake) badge picking them up? I mean, it’s an abort code and not a launch code, but still... 😬
Quick Key Fitz, the Fastest Typist in the West.😁
Every time I see his face, I want to punch something. And I would love to see you punch him, alas...
Your work, it's too slow. -- Well, I'm sorry, we all don't have superspeed. -- Oh, this isn't about superspeed. This is about your turtle speed. You work and then you stare, and work and then more staring. We have to go. -- Hurtful. 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
[The cross she gifted him] isn’t a lucky rabbit’s foot. This is a symbol of faith. Who would return such a gift? Someone who is well versed in tropes and knows a mark of certain death when he sees it. 😁
I’m gonna call you “Ronald” and you... “Ronald Two”. What a disappointing lack of imagination. You could have at least called them Ronald and Donald, sheesh.
I don’t know how Radcliffe can even look at the Primitives without curling in a ball and go catatonic with guilt.
Daisy... you were brainwashed. -- So was Ward. I’m going to read this as the ultimate sign of how utterly lost Daisy is at the moment because in any other way this line would be some heavy revisionist BS. Ward was certainly groomed by Garrett but his free will was intact all along, as was his ability to discern right from wrong. He even rejected the brainwashing angle himself when it came up in S2. Also, Garrett never swarmed his brain with mind-controlling parasites.
You have to understand, Lincoln, I gave [Daisy] something you never could ... happiness.True happiness comes from belonging. That's something she needs that you could never offer her. Now, deep down, you know this. Sadly, Lincoln believes him, at least in part, as later in the episode he says “there's nothing I have to offer Daisy that she wants or needs”.
What the hell did you do to them? -- Well, it's not my finest work, but I was under extreme duress. There’s having a healthy ego and then there’s this. But he still cracks me up. 🤭
You got to hurry. -- Oh, turtle-man wishes for me to hurry. Tiene suerte esta guapo (he’s lucky he’s handsome). 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
Good thing we brought the very small plane to carry [all the hostages]. 🤣 🤣 Elena’s on fire this episode!
We caught Hive. Well done, team! And especially Elena, whose self-satisfied smirk is a joy to behold. Now, would you all be so kind to drop him into an active volcano? You’re in the Pacific, there’s bound to be one in flying distance...
I can tell by your mustache that you're a man of importance and not to be trifled with, so I will be absolutely honest with you ... the process is irreversible. -- And I can tell by your beady little eyes that you're a worm. Ah, the beginning of a beautiful friendship...😁
You got a lot of good people on this team...real heroes. That's not me. I know what you’re doing, AoS. And it’s working. Damn you.😭
Is anyone gonna talk to [Daisy]...at least let her know we have Hive? -- That's not a great idea right now. We need to stick to the security protocols. -- You got to be kidding me. [storms off to visit Daisy] Mack, you’re the best. Also because you finally managed to get rid of the Necklace of Doom. Phew!!
We've had enough tragedy. A little fun wouldn't kill us. With your record? Going on vacation might just trigger another alien invasion.😁
Snorkeling is an interesting choice for two people who almost drowned at the bottom of the ocean.
The worst part about Hive is, when he's making you hurt the people you care about, he makes you love him for it. If Hive isn't the devil, he's the closest thing to it you and I will ever see. A hug and a few minutes chatting with Mack and Daisy is already starting to put the blame where it belongs. I’m telling you, Mack Therapy. It would have worked. 👍
Is [the necklace] yours? -- No. I think it's YoYo's. -- All right. I'll give it to her. Too soon to stick, AoS. I’m sure nobody panicked. Right?😁
[Hive] can't be contained. He has to be destroyed. Well, I suggested a volcano but nobody ever listens to me...
We're safe. Coulson's sealing up the base. Ah, well, alright then...we’re lucky the Playground didn’t blow up by the end of the episode 😁
Hi again, Agent O’Brien who was in Bahrain, tailed Fitz during the Grand Theft Toolbox and recently infiltrated Hivetown. It was nice knowing you.
FitzSimmons plan a romantic getaway and all hell breaks loose. Naturally.
Professor Vaughn's Third Year Compiler Theory? The esteemed (?) Professor Vaughn (third year? I thought you guys graduated the Academy in one?) had already been unfavourably mentioned in 1x02 and 1x12. I want to meet him.
They’re gone. We have to cut our losses. It’s all we can do. Elena does not approve. But I mean, the one guy in the opening credits is safe and he managed to save one redshirt. You can’t reasonably expect more. 😁
Please...take me back. First time watching, this was shocking. Now, there is only pain... 😭 😭 😭
Our Call as Agents – S3
See this post for an introduction and this post for season 2.
Don’t give up. We’re just getting started. Dig in. Do the work. Rest, and then keep going. If a quote resonates with you that’s not on here, add it––or make your own post! We are accomplices. We are co-conspirators. We are agents. And we have to keep going.
“But look around. We need you. We need that big brain of yours––and that heart here. Ok?” –– Director Coulson, 3.01
“I won’t give up. I can’t give up.” –– Agent Fitz, 3.02
“Do whatever you need to get better. We need you.” –– Agent Johnson, 3.03
“We can’t just look away.” –– Agent Johnson, 3.04

“You can’t just expect people to go through that kind of change and immediately have a handle on it.” –– Agent Johnson, 3.07
“I’ve been looking. I just don’t like what I’m seeing.” –– Agent Simmons, 3.08
“I need you to step up and do the damn job.” –– Director Coulson, 3.09
“You mean that you’re not a hero? That you’re freaking out and want to be anywhere but here? We’re all feeling that.” –– Agent Campbell, 3.10
“We believe the same thing. We need to help each other, to stop them.” –– Agent MacKenzie, 3.11
“Do you even hear what you’re saying? You sound like one of those hate groups that’s been trolling the internet.” –– Agent Johnson, 3.12
“It’s time.” –– Agent Morse, 3.13
“No, I’m quite comfortable blaming myself, actually, for the lot of it.” –– Agent Simmons, 3.14

“We both know we got to do something.” –– Agent Campbell, 3.16
“For one reason or another, each of us has been given a gift. Let’s put ‘em to good use.” –– Agent Johnson, 3.17
“It thinks if it breaks our legs, we’ll stop fighting. But it doesn’t know how stubborn we are, especially when it comes to protecting our own.” –– Director Coulson, 3.18
“The world’s changing. We had to adapt.” –– Agent MacKenzie, 3.19
“I’m ready to stand and fight.” –– Agent MacKenzie, 3.20
“Ok. What do we do?” –– Agent Simmons, 3.21
“This is my purpose. I know that now.” –– Agent Campbell, 3.22
Looks like it’s “Spacetime,” er, time on the rewatch clock! At last! It’s one of my favorite episodes of the series (and the source of my current header). Such a great standalone story, though its repercussions will be felt throughout the rest of the season and beyond. Waaaay beyond.
I love reading discourse about this episode, but there’s one point on which I disagree with a lot of the FS fandom, and it’s always bothered me. So I figured now with the rewatch it was time to get into. Of course, it has to do with this iconic scene:
I don’t think Jemma was exercising free will when she took Fitz’s hand here, though I know some see it that way. I think she was accepting fate, and very pointedly saying that she and Fitz were always destined to be together (a really interesting counterpoint to his "cursed” comment earlier in the season). So there’s also only one choice Jemma could have made in this situation, to hold hands, because Daisy had already seen it. If Jemma had not taken Fitz’s hand (and he hadn’t taken hers), then that’s what Daisy would have seen. Just the two of them standing there. But Daisy saw them holding hands, so that’s what they were always going to do. No matter what. It’s a causal loop, just as Jemma later explains in Season 5. But that’s what happens when you see the 4th dimension.
In the theory of spacetime that Fitz explains, there is no past, present, or future. It’s all one thing, all happening at the same time. We just perceive it linearly. It’s like a book that’s already been written (or a TV show that’s already been filmed). We experience the beginning, middle, and ending in sequence, but as a whole it all exists as one thing (except Daisy skipped a few chapters and told them all the spoilers). You can’t change the ending. Jemma took, takes, and will take Fitz’s hand. Always. She can’t do anything else. There’s a beauty in that, I think.
Not even Season 5, which completely contradicted and disproved this particular theory of spacetime, can take that away from me.
And now that we’re seemingly going back to the time travel well in Season 7, I’ll be very interested to see how they further expand on the concept.
Agents of Shield Rewatch 3x17 The Team
I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS EPISODE LIKE YOU WOULDN’T BELIEVE FINALLY
Or maybe you would believe if you’ve read my past blogs idk
Awwww Joey’s on a date get it Joey
Elena was practicing her English hmmmm how curious I wonder why??
Hahahaa jk I know why
Lincoln also looks like he’s super into Daisy’s inspiring speech
Look, love is in the air in this episode and I’m not sorry at all
I ALSO LOVE LETTING SPANISH SPEAKERS SPEAK SPANISH TO EACH OTHER
I will never stop talking about that ok?
Fitzsimmons are working perfectly together right now I love it
Joey’s first take down but don’t worry your sweet little head Joey he totally deserves it
Mmmhmmm Mack and Elena are giving each other looks too
NO HIVE IS CONTROLLING ONE OF THEM
So many terrigen crystals so many bad ideas
Mack has been practicing his Spanish. I bet he knows all the romantic words. Just saying.
Hahaha Fitz looks disgusted that Jemma is excited by what’s going on with the dead guy but like he’s obviously super into her too so
Malick is not lying to Coulson for once
ELENA IS WEARING THE NECKLACE ALERT ALERT
May is paying very close attention to what’s going around her as I would expect
Poor Mack is super paranoid too
I can’t believe the lead-up to Fitz and Simmons getting together for real is an autopsy how very Mulder and Scully of them
“So ummm, have you seen any movies lately?” “You’re asking me to one?”
JEMMA SIMMONS HAS 0 CHILL
“They’re lucky to have you”
Translation: “I’m lucky to have you”
DNRIP Gideon Malick
“Get yourselves patched up and find somewhere to lie low for a while”
Look, I’m not saying Phil Coulson is trying to play matchmaker for his adopted children, but I’m also not not saying that
The Inhumans are fighting among themselves which is super fair
They think it’s Lincoln!
Why would they take blood from the neck? Having been trained in phlebotomy I can think of like 5 better places.
No one trusts anyone anymore boo
If only Jemma knew what her relationship with space would soon be boy would she change her tune
Also I want it noted that she went for the head on the shoulder obviously trying to get closer to Fitz because as stated before she has 0 chill
And Fitz goes right for it LIKE HE SHOULD
Just like that Fitz and Jemma go from nothing to a couple because Jemma explains it perfectly. Whatever their hangups are, watching everything fall apart around them is probably making both of them realize that they need to take advantage of what they have and the time they have together
Haaaaaaaaahahaha Fitz is hilarious and adorable and it’s easy to see why Jemma would jump at him
IT’S WHAT HE DESERVES
IT’S WHAT THEY BOTH DESERVE
IT WAS DAISY ALL ALONG
Poor Lincoln
When the base is a rockin don’t come a knockin
Seriously though at this point I think Phil realizes very quickly that it was Daisy all along
HiveWard calls Daisy “Skye” which is so like him
This episode is SO GOOD. It gets a 100000/10 on the TENSE scale. Also a 500/10 on the Love Is In the Air scale because legit I thought everyone was going to get some at various points. And of course a 100000000000000/10 on the Fitzsimmons scale because MY BABIES ARE FINALLY TOGETHER I WANT TO CRY.
Also updated Fitzsimmons Kiss Count:
Kiss on cheek: 1
Kisses all over face: 1 (cluster)
Sad you-have-a-space-boyfriend kiss on lips: 2
Making out while the world is falling apart: 1 (session)
Our song of the episode is a cover of “Absolute Beginners” by Carey Brothers featuring Butterfly Boucher. This one goes out to all the lovers out there. But mostly to Fitzsimmons.
His name is like your favorite word
HIS NAME IS LIKE YOUR FAVORITE WORD
