It all started with a guy named James Cook from Britain who liked sailing around exploring and documenting lots of places....1778. (The Hawaiians killed him because he threatened the aliʻi nui, the high chief of the Big Island).
and then some years later, whaling got to be huge, and everyone was docking and moving to Hawaii because it’s in a convenient location.
Cue Christian missionaries, conversion, Western culture everywhere, international trade agreements, sugarcane and pineapple plantations (the Big Five), the illegal overthrow of Queen Liliʻuokalani in 1893, and there you have the illegal American occupation of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi for over a hundred years.

idk about anyone else's asian american households but growing up my family watched so many asian films and shows from bollywood, lakorns, to wuxia-genre chinese dramas and korean soap operas. It was a whole experience and era where we would gather to watch and then if a cousin wanted to borrow the tapes, we let them take it for a month, and that's how my romantic sensibilities were shaped.

Identity is a process and it takes some time to figure out your identity- especially as mixed people- when there aren’t many examples to look to. It can be hard to know how to navigate that space. But making things like this can help us sort out these feelings and know ourselves better💖
