“Emma Stone’s casting as Allison Ng, a character of Hawaiian and Asian heritage, in Cameron Crowe’s latest romantic comedy Aloha, received its fair share of criticism when the film opened in May. Crowe went so far as to apologize “to all who felt this was an odd or misguided casting choice” in a blog post. While on a press tour for Woody Allen’s Irrational Man, which opens on Friday, Stone for the first time addressed the controversy in an interview with an Australian news site.“I’ve become the butt of many jokes,” she said, referring to her role in Aloha. “I’ve learned on a macro level about the insane history of whitewashing in Hollywood and how prevalent the problem truly is. It’s ignited a conversation that’s very important.

In defense of her casting, she offered: “The character was not supposed to look like her background which was a quarter Hawaiian and a quarter Chinese.”

At the very least she addressed it, though I’m not sure I’d consider it an apology. Also the excuse is no excuse at all, I’m sure there’s an actress out there that could fill that role properly. 

Also, there’s an interesting bit at the bottom where the focus shifts to in demand actresses in their 20′s being so often cast opposite middle aged romantic leads. May be a little tone deaf to shift the start of the article to that, but it’s still a point I never really noticed before until they mentioned it.

While ignore the things that do harm the community from the inside, like the way white gay men* appropriate the mannerisms of black women, the no fats/fems thing for a lot of gay men, radfems, terfs, policing microlabels, and claiming they face the same oppression as POC.

*Some white queer non-binary individuals do this too. The one I'm most aware of is Jonathan from the new queer eye.

Wild how their priority is excluding people who don't experience sexual attraction instead of trying to fix any of that.

I know we’ve hashed about how terrible Fiona is but shout out that time she told me, a Jewish person, how I was incorrectly portraying a Jewish character (based on personal things I’ve witnessed in the exact location the roleplay was set in) when she herself is not Jewish

I am so crazy sorry that you had to go through that, that’s honestly so ridiculous but does not surprise me coming from her. I always encourage people to come forward and speak their truths. This is a safe space for people to speak on their experiences and to realize that they’re not alone in the way Fiona treated them.

          HERE’S A LITTLE LESSON, PALS! i really hope you learn and grow. some people just aren’t aware. but, you can be native american and still appropriate the culture! idk if she is or not but wearing headdresses is still a big no-no. headdresses are symbolic! and spiritual thing among a tribe!  if you read THIS PAGE, it explains why not EVERYONE can/should wear them! definitely not as a fashion statement. it’s appropriating and it’s not okay. some main points i want you to take in on that linked page is “The Sioux were thought to be one of the first Native American tribes to use these head pieces.  Not everyone among the tribe could wear one, however.  The Native American headdress was reserved for the most powerful and influential among the tribe.” and “Perhaps there is meaning then as to why we usually picture the chief wearing one.  It is a little known fact that Native American headdresses were not made completely in one sitting.  In fact, each time the chief, warrior, or other important tribe member committed a brave act, a feather was added.  Therefore, the more feathers in the headdress, he braver and sometimes much more ominous the wearer was.  In certain tribes, the brave act itself was not enough.  The warrior would have to provide himself by fasting for several days and meditating the entire time to show his steadfastness.  This fact alone makes the significance of the Native American headdress very important.” OH and there’s this “It is also a very surprising and little known fact that women did not participate in making the Native American headdress.  Only the men would help to make them, and this was often made by the chief or warrior’s closest friends and allies.  Of all the feathers, the Golden Eagle feather was the most coveted and the most significant.  If someone had one of these in their headdress, they received a great deal of reverence and respect from other members of the tribe.“ AND FINALLY “This same tradition should also be kept sacred and honored today. A friend of mine, like an actual friend whose company I enjoy, is trying to justify white people wearing costumes that imitate Native culture on Halloween because it’s Halloween and it’s about fun. She’s asking people to send their kids  out dressed as offensively as possible. 

what the fuck. what the fuck. what the FUCK. 

I’m done with this person. I’m going to try and educate her because that’s within my power but I’m not about to keep giving my time and energy, even occasionally, to an unapologetic racist.
