i have a genuine question, so please don't jump down my throat (at least those in the replies). what's the big deal with casting a fc as a different ethnicity if they do it on shows? or making a character a certain ethnicity when the actors ethnicity is unknown? isn't this the fun of having an original character to build up and make your own?
i would never jump down ur throat unless ur being purposefully ignorant ! so pls , this is a safe space . i’d like to clarify that when tv shows / movies / media / etc cast somebody ethnically incorrectly , most of the time people aren’t okay with that either . it’s not acceptable there either . you can build and make your own character , but ethnicity will always always effect someone . always . unless u have the privilege of being white / caucasian , in which case - u maybe NEVER think of ethnicity . but the rest of us people of colour don’t have that luxury. we have to think about it constantly, because we’re constantly thrust in as either a harmful stereotype , or ugly, or laughed at and belittled , because of who we ETHNICALLY are . things we never chose but were literally BORN INTO. ethnicity matters because its spent so long being made fun of and seen as a ‘joke’ , until now - when suddenly, people are like ‘ omg lets make things diverse !!! heres an indian male playing a canonically chinese character! ‘ like. thats not really . .diversity , because you’re still ERASING what little representation a culture and ethnogroup originally had. ethnicites arent interchangeable and replaceable . our identities , ethnically , matter . so SO much . so please acknowledge it if ur going to cast us as ‘ any minority ‘ thats fine , but don’t put a mexican fc for a colombian character . its not really fair on any party , because ur basically saying ‘ u all look the same tho right ? ur all a minority . so . its the same in the end . ‘
even if this isnt how people MEAN it to be . it comes across that way because of centuries of ignorance , bullying , and overall discrimination .
