Dusky Cockroach - Ectobius lapponicus (nymph)

With a species of Termite finally receiving a proper introduction on this blog and further expanding the scope of the insects found here, it seems best to also give a small reminder of the other individuals within that particular insect order. Moreover, with some fresh images, it offers the chance to contrast and compare the recently added Pacific Dampwood Termite with its distant relatives: the Cockroaches of Blattodea. Furthermore, today's images highlight something new from the realm of Dusky Cockroaches: nymphs, hard as that may be to believe. Despite their small size, these are exceptionally swift runners, but they are not as fast as the adults. As well, being insect nymphs, these individuals rely on running capabilities to evade danger and keep to shaded spots until receiving functional wings upon completion of their final molt. Cross-referencing with other pictures of this species' nymphs, it appears that the sexually dimorphic traits manifest relatively early in their development. As such, it might be possible to determine whether you have found a female or male Roach nymph at a cursory glance, and we appear to have female nymphs here. While female Dusky Roaches tend to keep to this shape and have upturned cerci, the male Roaches don't sport amber coloration in adulthood, and they are more streamlined with short outward cerci. Of course, I could be completely off-base with these nymphs here.

In any case, we can be sure that the specimens found here are nymphs, as the dorsal side of their abdomens are completely exposed due to lack of wings. As mentioned above, this insect will gain wings which cover its abdomen upon completion of an adulthood molt. In the case of Dusky Cockroaches, they are very much capable of flight, and I have seen many instances of this flight during investigations of them within my neighborhood's undergrowth. Interestingly, I've typically witnessed flight during the daylight hours, and when flight had occurred, the landing was usually in a darker area. At nighttime, including when these pictures were taken, mobility is achieved through swift scampering, and even so young, nymphs like this are quick on their tarsal claws. Just to further clarify, however, Roaches as a whole are well-adapted to low light or low visibility conditions, and they thusly benefit from strong night vision for navigation. They are not necessarily adverse to light, but light can stimulate them to move, and in this particular case, the mobile activity from these nymphs was likely due to the camera flash. It seems drastic, but insects must rely on their sensory arrays to keep out of danger. This not only includes visual acuity, but also antennae flicking, and the many leg spines and rear cerci along the body. These features are most definitely visible here, even during the nymph stages.

You know, we've been here for a really long time, we all have our individual reasons for being here, each and every single one of us saw something on them that we thought it was worth it getting involved, fighting for, take something away from it for ourselves. We went through so much shit, they went through so much shit. Things could be better, it could be easier, I wish I could say that I think "freedom" is just around the corner, but probably isn't. But at the end of the day, it's all for this. For them to prove to the world it's worth it, that they deserve a chance of being who they truly are. MASSIVE FUCK YOU to everyone in this nasty industry who told them they wouldn't make it because of who they were, everyone who told them they needed to fit into something they were not.

The last 24 hours were insane, my heart is bursting with pride for my boys, it physically hurts how much I love them. We always say how weird it is how they always seem to be moving in sync, orbiting around each other, and they literally are on their highest moments right now, on the same day. It's like a universe thing, the sky is blue and the grass is green kind of shit. They truly made it. For completely different reasons, in completely different contexts, doing their own individual things, but always for being amazing artists and doing their best to stay grounded, to stay genuine, for fighting for something.

Tadi pagi ketika sedang berdoa di masjid, tiba-tiba ada ibu di sebelah yang memberikan 1 air mineral sambil tersenyum. Sepertinya beliau menyadari saya sedang menangis saat berdoa lalu memberikan air minum. Di situ air mata semakin mengalir karena membayangkan Allah yang memberikan air minum lewat beliau.

Kalau bukan karena Allah, rasanya tidak mungkin ada orang asing yang rela berdiri dari tilawahnya lalu mengambilkan air minum untuk devi. Seolah Allah sedang menyampaikan, “Tenang saja devi.. ada Aku yang mencintaimu dan selalu memberikan apa yang menjadi kebutuhanmu..”

Bahkan, sekedar air minum saja, sejauh apapun mata airnya, jika memang Allah takdirkan untuk kita, maka Allah yang membawakan dari mata air, kemudian di tempat pengolahan air, ada kendaraan yang membawa ke masjid, lalu diantarkan oleh orang, sampai ada di depan tempat duduk saya. Begitu panjangnya perjalanan air minum tsb hingga siap diminum tanpa harus mengambilnya dari mata air, dan sungguh seluruhnya adalah kebaikan dari Allah..

Cukuplah Allah yang menjadi pengisi terbesar hati dan pikiran kita, biarlah Allah yang akan mengurusi sisanya. Tak perlu khawatir karena bersama Allah semua akan baik-baik saja :)

Semoga selalu ingat bahwa Allah senantiasa ada, bahwa Allah selalu melihat kita dengan cinta, menunggu do’a-do’a terbaik kita, cerita keseharian kita.

Meskipun Allah jauh lebih tau dengan apa yang kita rasakan dan alami, tapi menyampaikan apa yang kita rasakan adalah hal yang semoga bisa menenangkan hati.
