from /r/vexillology Top comment: To summarize it in the quickest way possible, communist revolution in the 1940s distracted America enough for Japan to yoink Alaska and other Pacific territories. Once the Balkinization of Japan rolled around about 30 years later, Alaska, now Arasuka, had developed a unique culture of it's own and became independent. America, which is now a ML one-party state, gets Hawaii and some other territories back but Great Britain allies with Arasuka to keep it from falling into communist hands, which acts as a great deterrent since this world's weaker America did not want to go to war with the UK and all it's colonies.
