Episode 1289: Katzelia’s Debut
Translator Notes:
There are a few points that should probably be clarified here.
First, the word “conviction” in Katzelia’s title in the first panel should be read as the sort of conviction one receives for a crime one has committed - not as in a deeply held moral belief or similar. I considered rendering it “Emperor of Judgment” to be clearer, but that isn’t what the wiki says, and that’d make it sound like he’s emperor specifically of the Arcarum primal beast, not of the general concept of judgment.
Second, the slum residents give an indication regarding how they interact with and think of Katzelia by the fact that they refer to him as anata. This is a second-person pronoun in Japanese akin to “you” in Japanese, but it has a very casual, familiar tone to it that would be very inappropriate if used towards a standard king and his subjects. It’s more typically used between close friends, or people in a relationship. “Katzelia-sama” would be a more polite and regal way for them to refer to him when speaking to him.
Finally, the joke in the last panel worked a bit better with Alexiel’s Japanese name, “Godguard Brodia”, which she turned into Mesengaado Buroudia, or “Line-of-sight-guard Brodia”. I did like how “Gaze” riffed off of “God” more than just randomly saying mesen, though, so it’s a bit of a wash in that respect.
