You didn’t think I would end this miniseries without working Jack into the mix, did you? He had appointed our Lady Detective “honorary constable” in S1E13 King Memses’ Curse and “special constable” in S3E7 Game, Set and Murder; it’s only fair for her to offer him a position at the agency.

Even though the new Commissioner forbade Jack Robinson to solve cases with a civilian, he didn’t mention anything about Archibald Jones, so no direct order was violated in my book. As for the title, it came to me rather easily because it’s our utmost wish that the “liaison” between Phryne and Archie/Jack would be on both a professional and personal level.

Miss Fisher Random Thoughts (288)

It has been pointed out several times before; the gold tie Miss Fisher quipped that suited Archibald Jones in S2E11 Dead Air was borrowed from Alexander Cotton (S1E2 Murder on the Ballarat Train). However, I never noticed (or had forgotten) that Archibald’s sweater vest was the very same one Paul Waddington donned in S1E4 Death at Victoria Dock. It seemed that Jack took his undercover operation very seriously and hit the consignment shops beforehand searching the perfect ensemble for his incognito. Kudos, Inspector!

Miss Fisher Random Thoughts (303)

According to Wikipedia:

Archibald is a masculine given name, composed of the Germanic elements erchan (with an original meaning of “genuine” or “precious”) and bald “bold”. (Link here)

Theobald is a Germanic dithematic name, composed from the elements theod- “people” and bald “bold”. (Link here)

I think it’s interesting that Jack chose “Archibald” when he was incognito since undercover work by nature was to deceive others, nothing “genuine” about it. However, it’s also quite fitting as the real Jack Robinson was an honest copper, a genuine Man of Honor.

As for Hugh, he was a people pleaser. Although not always successful, he tried his best to make everyone happy, Dottie, his mother, the angry mob at Mr. Biggs’ boxing tent (“Alright, alright, listen! If everyone’s happy, I’ll finish the fight for the lad”, S2E4 Deadweight). The middle name Theobald suited him.

p.s. Speaking of the name Archibald/Archie, it was used three times in the series: Archie Davies, Archibald Jones, and Archie Woods. Since MFMM didn’t recycle the characters’ names as often as they did their wardrobe, I once dedicated a short piece to this anomaly, and to feature Archibald Jones any chance I got. (Link here)
