The Brian Hayes speech at the 78th Fine Gael Ard Fheis

At the 78th Fine Gael Ard Fheis on Saturday January 23 2016 the Fine Gael Director of Elections, Brian Hayes spoke just ahead of the Leader's Address. His speech was the one of real interest. Here it is in full: "On behalf of the parliamentary party I want to thank you all. Without you we wouldn't be here. You have stayed loyal to this party over the years - both in good and bad times. We thank you for your loyal support and we especially ask that over the coming weeks, you give everything to drive home our message, that we must keep the recovery going. When the history of this period is written I believe that one thing stands out; that this great party, as it has so often in the past, held its nerve and stood our ground. Together, with our partners in the Labour Party, we formed a national government to serve this country, to bring Ireland back from the brink and to restore our independence. Of the 12 coalition governments since the foundation of this state, this Fine Gael/Labour coalition government is the most successful in the history of the state. For three and a half years I was privileged to work as Minister of State in two departments; Finance and Public Expenditure and Reform. The abiding image of the stability and common cause which is at the heart of this government is the image of Brendan Howlin and Michael Noonan working together in both of those departments. It's an image of success, of achievement and partnership. And to those who have been most loud in recent years, with their personalised attacks and cowardly social media comments, I say we are not afraid of you and our voice will not be drowned out. No one knows the date of the election. Not even Michael Ring! As the Party's Director of Election I want you to know, and especially I want our opponents to know, that we are ready whenever the Taoiseach sets the date. That our candidates are ready. That our membership is ready. That we have prepared well and that soon the people will make their choice. Of the 88 candidates we have standing for Fine Gael 29 are women. This is the largest number of women candidates to contest an election for any political party ever. We make no apology in demanding that the Dáil needs to be better represented. So what of our opponents? Had we followed the advice of Mr Gerry Adams, that well known economic guru from west Belfast, if we had followed his advice, this country would have faced 30 years of austerity. Had we followed Sinn Fein's advice this country would be where Greece is now. They said we would need another bailout, they got that wrong. They said that unemployment would go up with no growth because of the adjustments that had to happen, they got that wrong too. They said that there was no savings to be made from the promissory note deal negotiated by Michael Noonan, despite using its proceeds to fund their alleged pre budget submission, they got that wrong too. Sinn Féin presents itself as something new despite the fact that Mr Adams has been around as long as Robert Mugaby. Well this party isn't fooled by Sinn Féin. We know who, and what, they are. The Irish people don't want Sinn Féin next nor near the government of this Republic. But the crucial question for Sinn Féin is who do they answer to? Is it the people or the republican criminal underworld with their boiler suits and balaclavas? Their deputy leader, Ms McDonald recently described one Thomas Slab Murphy as "a very typical rural man". Mary Lou, with friends like that, who needs enemies. And what of poor old Fianna Fáil? They can't even get a proper poster campaign right. Fianna Fáil are also led by a man who believes in rewriting history, but in his case he believes that history only began in March 2011. He believes that what happens before that date is a type of pre-history, where there are no records and no memory. Well people won't forget him or his party’s role in bankrupting of our country. And can Fianna Fáil really be trusted on doing a deal with Sinn Féin post the election? A desperate party can do desperate things. James Dillon's abiding advice at the last Ard Fheis he spoke at was clear and to the point: "United we stand divided we fall". I ask that in everything we do now and in the weeks ahead, we display unity in all our campaigns. And just as we stood by Ireland over the past 5 years, Ireland will stand by us when the time comes."

Mary Lou McDonald TD - Sinn Féin’s Ard Fheis will take place in the Convention on the eve of the centenary of the 1916 Rising

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader, Mary Lou McDonald TD has confirmed the date of Sinn Féin’s upcoming Ard Fheis, which will take place in the Convention Centre on the 22nd and 23rd of April, on the eve of the centenary of the 1916 Rising. Deputy McDonald said: "I am pleased to confirm that Sinn Féin’s Ard Fheis will coincide with the anniversary of the Rising, taking place on the eve of the Easter Week Centenary. The theme of the Ard Fheis will also coincide with the ideals of the Rising – striving towards a United Ireland of equals and delivering a Republic rooted in equality and social justice. There will be a series of events throughout the weekend marking the centenary which is of such historic magnitude. There will be pageantry on Sunday with an Easter commemoration at the GPO and a reading of the Proclamation. Sinn Féin will also be supporting an event to ‘reclaim the Vision of 1916’ on Sunday, which will chime well with the chief themes of the Ard Fheis; honouring the republican ethos of the men and women of 1916 and supporting a vision of Ireland rooted in true democracy and inclusivity."
