Hi Frank ! A question for you : what is your opinion on herons ? (Herons are those birds with long legs, a long neck and a long beak ; they can retract the neck a lot, like on my avatar.)
Nice. Thanks for telling me!
I actually don't have much experience watching wild herons and really don't know how common they are in the SF Bay area. (There are some here, but I've never seen one in a backyard and I usually pass them on the highway when I'm headed home from work.) I think they're "fine" -- not especially ugly, and not unusually shaped. They're pretty close to the line between "bird" and "not-bird." The herons of the "real world" are much weirder -- I'm much more a fan of the wading birds.
The herons I see in pictures I know tend to be more "heron-look-alike" -- they're still fairly long-necked, long-winged, and somewhat long-billed, and they tend to have a bit of a forked tail and a "grippy hand" on the end of their beaks, but they don't have any especially distinctive features like the weird neck, a lot of feathers, or even a red eye.
