Out of all the moments in Umineko, the one that always fills me with the most incandescent rage is when Natsuhi tells at Krauss for sinking their family money into moon tourism and he goes "shut up! You're my wife, you should support me! You don't know about business!"
First: CLEARLY NEITHER DO YOU KRAUSS.
But for real: it's a small, petty moment but it perfectly encapsulates the patriarchy. Natsuhi rightfully points out that Krauss doesn't know what he's doing, but Krauss, rather than rebut her with an actual plan, instead insults her gender and denigrates her to be lesser than him. He knows he can't argue, so instead he uses the fact that she's a woman--that she's his wife--to insult her.
And it just breaks my heart because for the past four episodes we've seen Natsuhi constantly, relentlessly support her husband. When she's on screen, there's a good 40% chance that she's saying that Krauss is the next head, that he will make the Ushiromiyas a glorious family, that he is smart and capable and dignified and how dare you insult him! But the one (1) single time she rightfully calls him out, he throws a tantrum.
And maybe I'm reading too deep into it, but knowing the circumstances around their marriage almost makes this scene a betrayal. Natsuhi did not have a choice. We don't even know if she graduated high school. She was a trophy to humiliate her family. Her life for the past approx thirty years has been painful and miserable. The only, only bright spot for a long while was that Krauss tried to be a good husband to her. He tried to connect with her, to make her comfortable, to make this match one of love rather than just a cruel arrangement.
So this scene feels like a stab in the back. For all his pretty words about wanting to cherish his wife, about wanting a life partner, about seeing her as a person and not just a toy--this one time we see her state her opinion in opposition to his, in regards to an extremely important matter, he insults her. And not just insults her, he insults her by calling her his wife--because she is his wife, her opinion has no merit. Honestly, I feel like it would hurt less if he slapped her and called her a bitch.
