I've always seen v3's reveal of everything being a massive televised ultimate real fiction killing game as a commentary on how fiction gives us an escape from the real world and how capitalism takes advantage of this desire by giving us exciting, real-enough fictional stories with dubious practices. It often encourages us to become hooked on these predatory shows by implicitly claiming it will be the spice in our mundane undersirable lives, in the same way Danganropa claims to be giving a window into an exciting new reality by watching a staged, artificially-interesting but truly deadly death game.
But i've always wondered, what the hell could be wrong with the outside that makes people this is okay at all? GENUINELY what about Danganronpa could be enjoyable and moral in this universe because it's not a psychological thriller like it is to us, it is just straight up livestreamed torture. Maybe the sickest of us would be fine with that, maybe people like tsumugi who were particularly impacted by the world of fiction would be, but communities, governments, and parents? Does the whole world truly think fiction is worth killing for?
I know the protrayal of this audience is probably extragerated version of how Danganronpa thinks the world is, a bit selfish and truly impacted by the media we consume. But idea of a normal society enjoying a real death game, as if this type cruelty is just dormant part of the human condition waiting to be exploited by the most evil capitalists you can imagine, is kind of unimaginable to me. I cannot emphasize enough there's a reason why there will never be a death game irl even if there's been extremely exploitive reality tv shows in the past. Violence fucks people up and even in the most nillistiic of fantasies of humanity you can't make people enjoy (who they percieve as) innocent people dying. Much less the youth of our society not just dying but killing each other. Much less the children themselves enjoying this. The extremely casual way the people of the otherwise normal outside world react to Danganronpa as nothing more than entertainment is absolutely barbaric, but more compellingly, bizarre.
Maybe this is why the ending is definitely all a lie made up by Tsumugi. Maybe the idea is so far out there it's just not there and I'm just overthinking another one of Danganropa's extreme moments ment to shock and hammer in the point.. but it's much more interesting to imagine a world we're all this madness is perfectly explainable. It is so very interesting to me to imagine a society that's been so compromised by something-... that it has gone mad enough to enthusiastically consents to death entertainment.
I fucking love this man so much
