Those consequences only have to be applied once in a while to be effective: the traumatized psyche will then police itself. Char, une des protagonistes de cette histoire, vit à la surface intérieure d’une sphère aux dimensions planétaires où la nature pourvoit à tous les besoins. Une seule contrainte : avancer au rythme des « flamewalls » qui font le tour du monde en recyclant et réparant tout et qui transforme les défunts en bébés. Cette douce utopie va être bouleversée par l’arrivée soudaine d’un corps expéditionnaire venue du monde « normal ».

Un très joli roman, remplit de bonnes idées de science-fiction, avec un arc narratif solide, des personnages marquants et, bien entendu dans cette collection « Black Dawn », un sous-texte militant. Mais, comme dans le diptyque « A monk and robot » de Becky Chambers, l’utopie libertaire n’est possible qu’en venant se mettre en dehors des lois naturelles… Ce qui est finalement assez pessimiste.

History already tells us that withdrawing is not an option that the civilized will allow. First Nations people across Canada and the US, for instance, were not allowed to remain outside of the invading European civilization. Their children were taken by force to be abused—‘enculturated’—and forced into settler culture. It’s a paradox. Withdrawal can only persist when it is ineffective, and so is useless as a resistance strategy.

The wealth and well-being gap is partly a by-product of the mantra of profit-at-any-cost, but also from deliberate attempts to harm or impoverish, so that marginalized people are less able to mount resistance against occupation as resource extraction. As Nobel Peace prize laureate and war criminal Dr. Henry Kissinger infamously advised, ‘Depopulation should be the highest priority of foreign policy towards the third world, because the US economy will require large and increasing amounts of minerals from abroad, especially from less developed countries.’

One major reason that resistance strategy is underdeveloped is because thinkers and planners who do articulate strategies are often attacked for doing so. People can always find something to disagree with. That’s especially true when any one strategy is expected to solve all problems or address all causes claimed by progressives. If a movement depends more on ideological purity than it does on accomplishments, it’s easy for internal sectarian arguments to take priority over getting things done. It’s easier to attack resistance strategists in a burst of horizontal hostility than it is to get things together and attack those in power.
