I just realized… Irina is canonically gen beta… wtf

And the Haasband and Maris twins too :D

They, however, do not allow unlimited screen time. The only screens they have are LeapPad tablets and they're exclusively educational shit and it's only for long car rides/flights.

Ilya and Shane also very specifically raised Irina with minimal screens until she was 8 when she was part of the dialogue of "how much screen time do you think you should get". They actually have a TV package specifically to still get Treehouse and YTV so their kids have to specifically schedule what shows they wanna watch into their day.

Haasbands and Maris follow that bc they're surrounded by iPad babies and they will not let their kids turn out that way. They do all have libraries of books in different languages that are always available to the kids, and full on playrooms with dolls and toy trains and cars and shit too.

I'm not having the best couple of days so I'm rereading OtFC and I forgot how down bad Aris was for Mac from the start. Its so cute Aris my little emotionally repressed guy <3

The best part about being able to go back and write Aris being at the Cens' first Stanley Cup wing is that he has actually seen Mac. Mac's first time seeing Aris throws him off kilter bc he's suddenly very aware he's gay and attracted to this guy as opposed to the nebulous attraction to men he's had before.

Aris was among the first couple thousand people to follow Mac when his Instagram account was made public post-adoption. He's been following Mac for years. Mac went to follow him at the World Juniors and it was a 'follow back' button. He's never actually thought abt it bc he found Aris' account midway through the tournament, and he can't see when Aris followed him.

Aris has known for a while that Mac was 1) very pretty 2) a nice person and 3) a really good hockey player. Mac's Instagram when he was younger was, pretty much exclusively, hockey shit and occasionally Anya pictures. His stories are where the chaos/personal stuff comes from.

So yeah Aris has been down bad for Mac from literally the start. Mac has been an anchor to Aris' future life since before they officially met. Mac represents the kind of people Aris will be playing against, the kind of people he will be playing with, and the kind of community within the NHL that Aris would, someday, be a part of! And ofc the whole "that's his future husband" of it all, but that's a meta level read of Mac being the anchor to Aris' future aspirations/dreams/plans.

okokokok i am *slightly* confused about character ages, but specifically in relationship the the pike kids for the IF-verse. correct me if i'm wrong but from what i understood, they're older than vera but younger than mac? also to make sure i'm not getting confsued, irinia is about four years older than the haasband twins right? and then mac and aris's twins are older than the haasband twins but younger than irinia? idk i just wanna make sure i'm understanding the ages of the younger characters correctly

Hi hello beatitude is everything to me!!!! Seeing domestic haasbands with their kids? PRECIOUS! Mac being called uncle Mac I cannot! The his emotional support idiots aren’t even here and you’re making fun of them so so goofy AND VINCENT MY BABY MY LIL PTERODACTYL

At some point in the future Mac, Aris, Kern, and Jacobs are all on the Cens with Luca while Ilya and Shane are the coaches and the two of them get such schadenfreude from watching Luca have to deal with them.

Snide little "at least they don't use AXE" and "hey they're all married. Imagine dealing with them before that. Gee wonder what that was like?" from Hollanov (and Ash) when Luca complains. He flips them off ofc.

I’m on day two of a like 16 hour roadtrip and so I come bearing questions! What’s your favorite scene you’ve written for the if-verse? And your favorite detail? What are you most excited to write or include in the future of the ifverse? What do you consider to be the hottest thing you’ve written for it??

Okay so here’s the thing.

My favourite scene is chapter 46 of Deal. I knew that was where the story was heading and the scene of Luca in the bathroom with Ash, the immediate aftermath, and then them coming back together a few months later were some of the first scenes I conceptualized. The whole reason Luca’s love of Nanaimo bars gets brought up as much as it does is because the description of Ash on the hood of Luca’s car, in a neon toque, with his sketchbook and scarred fingers and a homemade tray of Nanaimo bars was the scene that created Ash. That’s how Ash popped into my head. So writing the lead up to them getting there (namely the attempt and Luca right after) was my favourite part.

My favourite detail… I love Mac and Aris being opposites that fit together perfectly. Mac can’t cook but he can bake, Aris can’t bake but he can cook. Mac likes coffee, Aris likes tea. Aris has an (undiagnosed) anxiety disorder and Mac has his avoidant attachment style that requires him to constantly make sure Aris still loves him (which in return reassures Aris). A more minute detail is giving Luca huge age gap siblings because while Luca 100% gives youngest sibling energy, he also gives only child energy. I based his relationships with his sisters on my relationships with my cousins. I’m the youngest by 9 years and younger than the eldest cousin by 14 years, and I grew up with that level of “I can’t tell my parents xyz thing but I can tell my cousin”.

I’m definitely most excited to write a very specific scene for Irina’s story. I decided Skylar’s a goalie and literally the second I decided that a bunch of pieces fit together quickly. They haven’t even kissed let alone fucked yet the first time Irina goes fully feral with the “don’t fucking touch her” vibes. And I know I’m going to be writing that scene probably from Skylar’s POV and her voice is starting to form.

Hottest thing… It’s 100% Ash and Luca 🤣 tied between the New Years scene (sneaking around, strap ons, Luca losing his mind when he finds out about Ash’s smaller toy) and the shibari scene.

Honestly I don't think Aris would propose at all, I think it's very much a one sided thing in terms of the asking. That's not to say Aris is passive, and it's 100% a conversation they've had before, but there's also this sorta stereotype abt hockey players getting married young (depending on show/book canon Hayden gets married at like, 21 and starts having kids not long after) and that's something we don't see as much with the canon GCU couples. 

For Mac and Aris their first full season as an out couple (with Mac in Winnipeg and Aris in New York) Crowell actively scheduled them and their games to try to force them apart bc he doesn't want a second generation of queer players, esp not two who came out of their rookie season where the League was trying to position them as enemies and went "how about no" to the league's story. Their second season isn't much better but they have the Olympics, which lets them have a little more time together than normal, even playing on different national teams. 

Aris spends most of the Olympics just vibing, he likes the guys he's on a team with (which actually includes Sloane from IF:Deal) and he's securely got a group of hockey player friends that support him, not even touching on the fact that he's Aris Hunter at these Olympics. Yes he wants to win but it's more a by-product of having fun. Like, he's so chilled out he can't really focus much on anything besides hockey and being gay with Mac.

Mac, meanwhile, had a very mundane realization that he's wants to marry Aris ASAP, which was then followed by the realization that no matter how they go about it they're doomed to be compared to the rest of their hockey player queer families. So he's trying to figure out when to ask Aris when they have so little time alone together because he doesn't want to wait for years when they maybe have a shot at playing on a team that could afford them both when they enter free agency. 

He 100% ends up trusting the ring to Ash (keeper of all the Hollander-Rozanov secrets) who just sorta has it on him at all times after that, and when he wins the cup c. June 2030 in his first season as the Bisons' captain and the whole extended Hollander-Rozanov family is on the ice for him he gets it off Ash and asks.

Aris isn't blind-sided by it but he is surprised. He knew Mac would be the one to propose bc, like you said, he's much happier giving over control and going at whatever pace fits best. Mac asking ~2 years into being together is a "normal" amount of time but Mac's 22 and Aris is 23 and that's still p young for marriage. 

He says yes bc ofc he does and then bc he's Aris and he loves to jump into things all or nothing he suggests getting married that August during their annual Greece trip. And Mac has to take a minute to be like "August 2030? THIS August?" "yep" "fuck yes" bc he too likes to hurtle into things when he's made his mind up.
