The Chantels - Maybe. Uploaded by 77GhettoD
This 1958 track, which was written and produced by Richard Barrett, was arguably the earliest hit by what would be later termed (somewhat pejoratively) a 'Girl Group'. Lead vocal is by Arlene Smith
the Chantels
Formed: 1956 in New York, New York
Arlene Smith has one of the most hopeful voices of all time. Hearing her sing is akin to looking for an impossible love. Although "Maybe" is heralded as their most accessible song, "I'm the Girl" is the one that does it for me.
Thanks to an ex-boyfriend for introducing me so long ago.
Definitely a top 5 for best female vocals.
