This weekend I’m starting a lease on Winchester. I’ve been riding her for a few months, and I’m so excited to be able to call her mine in some small way.
Nimona is a movie about a gender-fluid anarchist punk who wants to adopt a villain but accidentally adopts a disgraced cop determined to clear his name instead. Nimona teaches him that respectability won’t gain him acceptance in a system that is more invested in order than justice, and that system deserves to be destroyed.
My favorite genre of movie is “the script is objectively silly but the cast is full of talent and they’re playing their parts to the hilt and having a blast”.
Some examples are The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement and The Muppets Christmas Carol.
Nimona (2023) is exactly what I’ve been craving since Sense8 got cancelled.
Big queer vibes? ✅
Anti-fascist allegory? ✅
Liberating the minds of those who have been brainwashed into protecting their oppressors and upholding the hierarchical order, ushering in a new age of understanding and cooperation? ✅
Hopeful themes all the way around? ✅✅✅
I’m middle-aged, queer, and don’t give a fuck. I’m not coming out anymore unless it’s relevant to the conversation or really funny.
I’m never prepared for how attractive Taika Waititi is, especially in the character of Blackbeard. It’s like a jump scare of hotness.
As an AuDHD person who has given up more things than most people have started, actually digging into something that doesn’t come naturally yet still somehow holds my attention is the most satisfying thing in the world.
Like I’ll be struggling along trying to figure this thing out that’s preventing me from progressing and then something will slot into place and it’s like I just spent a skill point and the next few branches on the skill tree just lit up, but in my brain.
