Starlight, Starbright (prequel to Blessings Under the Mistletoe)
Rhysand x female Night Court reader
Summary: You and Rhysand celebrate your first Starfall together; revelations are made.
A/N: Just in time for Starfall! On this note, I hope you all enjoy this prequel fic.
Despite this being a prequel, you don’t need to read the first one unless you want to. Which in that case, go ahead 😌.
You looked at yourself in the mirror as Nuala and Cerridwen as they added the finishing touches to your look for this evening.
Tonight is one of the most important nights of the year at the Night Court besides the Winter Solstice: Starfall. The time of year when everyone within the court celebrates the yearly migration of colorful spirits across the sky.
A tradition for you and your loved ones. Family and friends celebrate yearly by watching the phenomena outside your home, with food and activities to follow.
Though you had often enjoyed celebrating with them, a part of you had often hoped that you’d one day have a mate of your own to celebrate with. From what you would see from your parents and other members of your family coupled with their own mates made you feel that having a mate to celebrate with made occasions like this just as special.
And this turned out to be the case once you found Rhys and celebrated your first Winter Solstice together. Though you had been nervous about meeting and spending more time with your mate’s family (both biological and chosen), you were welcomed with open arms by everyone within his Inner Circle. Especially with Morrigan and Cassian who were “eager to know the female who brought a smile to their cousin and brother’s face” as they so eloquently put it. This also led to them both telling embarrassing stories about Rhys’ youth that had him mumbling and grumbling at them to stop it before they scare you away. Though, you had reassured him that you weren’t going anywhere. Both through words as well as holding his hand throughout the rest of the festivities.
Now here you are in your own personal quarters at Moonstone Palace, ready to experience another important Night Court holiday with your mate.
“You look lovely, (y/n). The High Lord will be pleased,” you heard both Nuala and Cerridwen tell you.
You blushed at the compliment, smiling at them through the mirror. “Thank you. Though, both of you deserve some credit for making me look as I currently do now.”
Before both can speak again, there’s a knock at the door. Despite having an idea of who it is, you still decide to ask who it was.
“It’s me, (y/n) darling,” you heard the voice of your mate answer from the door.
Once again blushing, you are about to turn back around to thank the twins only for you to realize that they are gone.
They must have left as soon as they could sense that Rhys’ was here, you thought to yourself.
My love, may I come in? Rhys’ voice interrupts your thoughts.
You smiled, still getting used to talking to Rhys through the bond despite discovering and accepting it between you both.
Giving yourself a final look in the mirror before turning around, awaiting your mate to enter. “Of course, my love. Please.”

When Rhysand twists the knob to your personal quarters, his breath is easily taken away by the sight in front of him.
In front of him, you are dressed in the beautiful dress that his mother had made specifically for his mate. A liquid-starlight gown made of pale blue chew, with tight, long sleeves, diamond wrist cuffs, and clinging to your silhouette. Meanwhile, your hair and make-up are done simply yet still bring everything together.
He lets out a low whistle as he walks up to you. “Moon and stars… you look exquisite.”
Once he’s within proximity of you, he gently takes your hand into his own and brings it up to press a kiss to. “And here you were afraid the dress wouldn’t fit. My mother had this specifically made for my mate.”
You blush. From the action or comments, he doesn’t know. “Rhys, how was I supposed to know that your mother had sewn this gown with material that tailors itself to the wearer?”
Rhys smirks. “Not just this dress but the one you wore during Solstice.”
“Really?” You asked, looking at him with intrigue.
The violet eyed man nodded, thinking of all the items, including this and the dress you wore during Winter Solstice, currently put away that his mother had created for future mate; you. “I wish you could’ve met her.”
“I wish I could have met her too,” you agreed with him, causing him to smile. “She and your sister sounded like wonderful females.”
“They were,” he said.
It saddened him knowing the three most important females in his life weren’t destined to meet in this life. A thought that brought tears to his eyes.
It must’ve been sometime because Rhys is brought back to reality when he feels your thumb gently caressing his cheek. “It’s okay, sweet Rhys.”
Curious about your reaction, Rhys touched the other side of his face to realize that his cheek is wet.
Despite realizing he had been crying, Rhys wasn’t ashamed to do so in front of you as he trusted you with everything in him.
In response to your gentle response, Rhys takes the hand that is sweetly caressing his cheek and kisses it. “Where would I be without you, my Moon and Stars?”
“Not suffering too much, I hope,” you quipped.
Rhys puts a hand over his heart in mock offense. “How dare you underestimate your importance in my life?!? I’d rather cut off my own wings than be without you.”
“Rhys, don’t say that lightly,” you start
“I’m not,” he interrupted. “You know better than anyone I don’t say things like this lightly.”
“Of course you don’t,” you agreed. “I just don’t want the Cauldron to give you misfortune simply for misspeaking.”
Rhysand smiled softly at his mate’s words. “I appreciate your careful approach, (y/n) darling. But I truly speak the truth when I say that the greatest misfortune I could ever face is either losing you or simply never having met you at all.”
After a moment or two longer of lovingly looking at one another, Rhys decides that the two of you better head out to meet your loved ones. First at your family home and then at the House of Wind with his own family. “Come now, my love. The night is young.
He extends a hand towards you to which you easily accept, pleasing the primal part of himself.

You are talking to Mor as your mate competes in arm wrestling with Cassian, Azriel and Armen surrounding them.
“Come on, boy” Armen said to your mate, her chosen champion for this little game. “I need a new set of jewels.”
Azriel smirked in the background. “As if Rhys can outmuscle Cas.”
“Shut it, Az,” Cassian interrupted. “Both you and Armen’s talking is making me lose focus.”
Armen rolled her eyes. “That’s the point, boy. I-”
“Stop talking to my champion,” Azriel interrupts Armen, leading to an argument as Cas and your mate continue working to outmaneuver the other.
“Ridiculous,” Mor said, rolling her eyes. “Thank goodness the two of us are reasonable and mature.Unlike some of us.”
You giggled at her quip. Despite the silliness of the situation, you can’t help but softly smile to see Rhys calm and content with those he feels comfortable around, especially yourself.
Though, you can’t say you were disappointed with how visiting with your family went. While your family had always respected Rhys as their High Lord, it was another thing for that same male to be your mate. Not because they didn’t trust your judgment but simply the matter of having to let go of you (a daughter, sister, niece, granddaughter, and so forth) to your mate whom they only know through the public eye.
Nevertheless, Rhys was able to win them over with his charm as well as the devotion he carried for you.
“The High Lord is a keeper,” your grandmother’s words echoed. The two of you sat together watching Rhys play with your little cousins.
“That he is,” you responded back to her as Rhys looked up at you. Smiling as if you were the most beautiful and perfect thing there was in all of Prythian.
“That’s because you are,” Rhys says.
Hearing his voice made you realize that you must have zoned out.
Blushing profusely, you apologized to Mor as well as your mate for being so rude by being in your own thoughts. Both of them laughed and said that you were simply just too cute for words.
“You should only be sorry that you missed your mate beat the Lord of Bloodshed at arm wrestling”—
“No you didn’t,” Cass interrupted. “You only beat me in one match when we had two more to go.”
“Wait a minute,” Armen said. “We never agreed to those terms.”
“Did too!” Azriel jumped in.
“Did not!” Armen said haughtily.

Much time after…
You and Rhys are standing out on the balcony enjoying the colors splashing across the sky, holding hands with one another.
Almost as if by coincidence, all your shared friends have seemed to disappear or have something else to do within the House of Wind, giving both of you this time to enjoy the scene before you.
While there haven’t been many words expressed since being out here, both of you enjoy one another in comfortable silence as the phenomenon before you play out.
Moreso, you enjoy seeing Rhys relaxed like this as you have yet to see him let loose from High Lord duties.
Instead, simply being the sweet, sensitive male that you have fallen in love with.
Love, you thought to yourself. Could it really—
You’re distracted from your thoughts when you look at Rhys taking in the beautiful sky before you both. Eyes filled with childlike wonder as he holds your hand in his most beautiful suit that matches the night sky.
In that moment, you realize you cannot go a minute more without telling him how you feel. So, this time, you will take the first step and tell your mate exactly how you feel.
As you are about to tell him your revelation, a pale green star spirit splashed across your cheek.
Embarrassed, you let go of Rhys’ hand and are about to wipe it off your face when he stops your hand from moving to your star splattered face.
“You’re beautiful,” he says softly.
Not too long after, Rhys himself gets splashed with a similar color star spirit as you had across his face.
This caused both of you to laugh, eventually leading to the two of you hugging.
Just a few minutes after this, you both would confess your love for one another. Making this Starfall the best one that you’ve both had so far in your entire lives.
