It's such an everyday mundane thing, sewing patches in ripped clothing. I do it all the time as a seamstress, and never think twice about it.  Clip the torn part back, clean up the raggedy edges, find a matching scrap of material, pin it down and stitch it in place.  An extraordinarily ordinary thing. But when the patch is ACU camo, and the rip is from snagging on the underside of a Stryker, and the pants have traveled thousands of miles to get here, it's different. When it's not a customer but my kid who says, "Hey, can you fix this for me?" my "Sure, I'd be happy to," has a catch in it. I fold the sturdy fabric carefully, like it's precious silk, and take it to my sewing room. Plowing through the box of scraps, I run across the robot print I used for his shorts when he was four, and the khaki twill that was school uniforms in elementary school. There's a piece of the plaid that became his favorite shirt in middle school. And this corduroy?  A jacket from high school that hangs in his closet. It's not cold enough for a jacket where he is now. When I finally find the piece of camo near the bottom of the box, it's hard to see the little grids of grey and green and cream. They're blurry and my eyes sting, and I blink hard and fast to keep those tears from falling. Stitching this tiny square of material in place, this little innocuous everyday task, is one of the hardest sewing jobs I've ever done, because the fabric is camo, and the soldier is my son, and these pants are headed out again, way too soon. But I stitch it, with an enormous amount of pride. I match the thread so the patch won't show. I do it carefully, and make the edges tight and strong, because he's hard on his clothes, and his job is hard on him, but he makes a point of always being squared away. And I know when I'm done, and he leaves to go back to his work, he'll take a little tiny piece of me with him, in that small mundane everyday ordinary patch. And I smile through the tears, because it reminds me that military families can never take the ordinary, the everyday for granted. And if the rest of the world doesn't understand that, it's okay. We get it.
