This is totally off topic for me, but I found something interesting and thought I would share. I had to research cannons today for a scene I'm writing. I found this gem that explains very well in plain English. This guy has done his research, and has some other good articles about pirates on his blog, too.

HAPPY TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY!!!!!!!!! Please remember that Jim Kirk got in trouble with the admiralty for officially declaring a "talk like a pirate day" onboard the ship, but since he got even Bones AND Spock to participate, it was all worth it. Plus the crew kept doing it every month. Everyone just kept it off official communications. Also Jim, Uhura, and Sulu absolutely did not get the rest of the bridge crew—and then the rest of Alpha Shift—to put on fake eyepatches and scavenged pirate costumes. And Bones definitely didn't have a historical replica costume from when he had a side job in college as a historic reenactment actor. Definitely not. And Sulu absolutely did not show off in the mess hall by slicing watermelon sections in midair as people hurled them through the air at his face.
