The differences between referencing, studying and tracing artwork

Okay.

I’ve seen a lot of people get these three confused so here I’m going to break them down for you-

Referencing another’s artwork is when you look at their art and try to make yours look more like theirs.

Studying another’s artwork is when you take someone’s artwork, trace the outlines of it to get a feel for how it works and proceed to NOT USE said trace work. This is just so you get a feel of what you’re supposed to do.

And tracing is when you just trace someone else artwork. Don’t do this. This is a form of art theft. Unless the artist is 100% okay with it (and some are) don’t do it.

You are allowed to trace real life images though to use for your artwork just not another artist’s because that’s mean and that’s cheating.

I can also make an entire separate post just dedicated to what’s considered art theft.
