I made an art journal from scratch today. Because we have no money to buy stuff like this right now, I’ve been trying to be more creative.
*Started out by applying washes to sheets of watercolor paper (I tore the edges before painting them).
*Then I used the cardboard backing from the now empty tablet of watercolor paper by cutting one in half. For the fabric covering, I used a scrub top I found at Goodwill (I got it because I love the fox themed pattern).
*The papers were simply folded in half and stacked together. I used a pushpin to make holes and then put staples in them (folding down their points with my scissors handles).
*I glued the papers to the covers next. And last I glued ribbon to the spine to finish the journal.
I think it turned out pretty cute. It was definitely a learning experience too.
It’s been a while, but I finally got round to making a second sketchbook tutorial! This time we’re doing a ridiculously easy circle sketchbook like the one below! Tutorial after the break! :)
You will need:
Some card for the cover, some paper for the pages inside, some string/wool/whatever, scissors or a pen knife, a compass or if you don’t have a compass then something circular to draw around and a pencil, and a hole punch!
Step One: Take your card and draw two circles for the covers, and then do the same on the paper. The paper is easier to cut out if you just clip a pile of it together and cut it all out at once, saves lots of time!
Step Two: Cut out all your circles and then hold punch through them all! You don’t want to hole punch too close to the edge or your pages might tear out later on, but you don’t want to go too far in or it’ll cut into your drawing space! About a centimetre from the edge is about right.
Step Three: Now you want to take a short-ish length of thread and thread it through the holes, obviously with one of the card covers either side! And then just tie the thread on the outside. You want to tie it with enough space so that you can open your sketchbook out flat, like the picture above.
And that’s it! You’ve successfully made your little circle sketchbook! Like I said, it’s crazy easy, and it’ll probably only take you like 5 or 10 minutes, so it’s perfect if you’ve never made your own sketchbook before. I just added a little bit of decoration to the outside of mine as well, but you could doodle on the cover or collage on it, or whatever you like!
Make sure to send me pics of any sketchbooks you made from this tutorial, and let me know if there’s another sketchbook tutorial that you’d like me to make! :)
