Resilience Handmade Journal by BrightCloudPress
After 8 months of researching, sampling, experimenting, testing, and preparation, I finally have Silco’s Nation of Zaun notebook in my hands. I wanted to create a life size version of what we see him use in the show, and I made the smaller one with the leftover leather and materials. There were ups, there were downs, there were creative liberties because the design makes no sense, but overall I’m really happy with them. This was my first time ever working with leather so it was all completely new to me, and accumulating the necessary tools took a little while.
The pictures with a grid background are the big one (A4+) and the pictures with the purple background are the small one (8.25x6)
If people are interested, I am open to making more of the smaller size for sale. They would be around $100-150 for materials and labor. These are 100% handmade and take time to complete, especially if I have to order more material. But, each one will be wholly unique and I’d be open to some customization as well.
I am exhausted, but I’m also so glad they’re finished and that I followed through even thought it took so long. I hope the book is still relevant lol and I hope others enjoy them as much as I do.
Arcane art book for scale:
Birthday tradition idea: Fill out a questionnaire about yourself every year like your favourite color, your favourite show, the song that's currently playing in your head, how much a loaf of bread costs, your comfort characters, best achievement, etc.
I've been doing it since I was 8, and next week I'm turning 18. If you're into journaling, it's honestly so worth it <3
Journal with Obscure Window and Key
Endpapers are cyanotype paper with leaf patterns created from various foliage I foraged from woods around Washington state. Endbands are blue and green silk soie perlée, with a blue ribbon bookmark hanging from the top. The cover is hand foiled in gold foil (purchased from Rocky Mountain Leather Supply). Cover design is based on the faux stained glass window in The Obscure Distillery in Los Angeles, with The Obscure key logo in the center.
Still a WIP but I’m almost done! I thrifted some old playing cards and wanted to turn them in a journal:D I did finish embroidering all the edges on the cover and back, but don’t have pics of that yet. Will post more later!
But I’m going to be running a western / cowboy themed D&D campaign, and this is gonna be my note taking journal for it!:) Also this song feels very fitting since the first town they will be in is HEAVILY inspired by Spacers Choice!
Time for an older journal! This book was handmade by the lovely BooksAndTrees on Etsy, with a stenciled design in colorshift paint on the cover added by me.
As you can see, by the end this book has a serious case of alligator mouth, and is actually quite difficult to get to lay flat (I'll do my best for pictures). That's because it's bound like a traditional book! The binding is designed to fit the undecorated pages, so the addition of all my junk journaling inside made the pages too bulky for their cover. Using this book made me realize why purpose-made junk journals are often bound differently from traditional books -- to account for the bulk.
To be clear, this was not a flaw on BooksAndTrees' part. They made the custom journal I ordered. This was a learning opportunity on my part, realizing why certain book-making decisions are made. If you're using premade journals and struggling with alligator mouth, look into junk journal specific binding. It could help with handling bulk.
Coptic notebook (Aug 2025) using beautiful handmade marbled paper by @renato-crepaldi (Aug 2023).
I don't make ficbindings with coptic binding very often because I like those to look more similar to traditionally published works. Coptic stitch is really satisfying to me though because it doesn't require glue to hold the covers and pages together, and because I like how the functional bits of the binding are clearly visible.
For this journal, I used hooked endpapers; you can see the "hook" in the first two pics above, with the paper wrapped around the section of pages at the very front and back of the book. I put extra paper on the inside covers so I wouldn't have to throw away cut pieces too narrow to put on another cover.
