Bleach, 2015, by Justin Bower. Oil on Canvas, 183 x 152cm. Shown by UNIX Gallery at Art16, Olympia, in May.
Figure Writing Reflected in a Mirror, 1977, by Francis Bacon. Lithograph in colours on Arches wove paper,, 104 x 72.5cm. Shown by Gildens Arts Gallery at Art16, Olympia, in May.
The breathtaking genius of Bacon screams from this modest piece.
Europa and the Bull, by Olivia Musgrave. Bronze, 18 x 13.5 x 9cm. Ed 1 of 9. Shown by John Martin Gallery at Art16, Olympia, in May.
Pre-meal Exercise Boxing, by Shih Yung-Chun.130 x 162cm, Acrylic crayon canvas. Shown by 伊日藝術 YIRI ARTS, Taipei, at Art16, Olympia.
I love Yiri's description of this artist's work as "bewildered gloom".
49. Harbour, Day, by Andrew Gifford. Oil on canvas, 135 x 106.5cm. Shown by John Martin Gallery at Art16, Olympia.
Another modern cityscape, but once morning has dawned.
Something of a nice 60s feel, no?
Wapping I, 2015, by Thom Gorst. Acrylic on canvas, 76 x 76cm. Shown by Anise Gallery, SE1, at Art16, Olympia.
Following yesterday's painting, here's another hyper-realistic depiction of decay. Gorst recently completed a PhD at the Glasgow School of Art, which examined the aesthetics of 'Post-industrial Maritime Dereliction'. Previously taking his subjects from real scenes of dereliction, his current practice takes imagined examples of it and abstracts them without context onto the canvas.
The Dream of Ruined Lotus, 2015, by Huang Ming Chun. Oil on canvas, 160 x 260cm. Shown by Fish Art Center, Taiwan, at Art16, Oympia.
Some people ask, 'What is the point of hyper-realism?' I ask, 'What is the point of people who ask, "What is the point of hyper-realism?"?'
