New Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te vows to remember Tiananmen crackdown

Taiwan’s new President Lai Ching-te said Tuesday that the memory of Beijing’s deadly crackdown at Tiananmen Square “will not disappear in the torrent of history”, in a post marking the event’s 35th anniversary.

This is how Communism works: no choices. In Hong Kong on Monday, 9 pro-Democracy legislators were forcibly removed from a meeting so that they couldn’t vote for a pro-Democracy candidate. Consequently, the pro-Communist candidate was “unanimously” elected. They’re calling it the “Hong Kong Coup.”

Back in 2019, artists were among those who took to the streets to demonstrate against the curtailing of basic rights. How are they doing, five years on? Unlike many of his contemporaries, multimedia artist Samson Young chose to remain in Hong Kong rather than going into exile. Young plays with codes and hidden references in his complex art installations. Filmmaker Kiwi Chow also stayed. He sold the rights to an internationally acclaimed documentary about the 2019 protest movement to a friend outside the country. Explainer: Hong Kong’s national security crackdown – month 47

More than three years after they were arrested, 16 democrats who pleaded not guilty in a landmark national security case finally heard their verdicts from Hong Kong’s High Court. They are among 47 defendants in the case, of whom 31 pleaded guilty. Most of the 47 have been held in custody since February 28, 2021.

The Hong Kong Bar Association has said that Beijing’s decision to enact national security laws in Hong Kong shows “worrying and problematic features,” while a former chief executive has hailed the plan as “good medicine” for the “seriously ill” city.
