a version of one of my favorite scenes from one of my very favorite fics, Pacify by @chickenpets. While I don't remember Harry liking tweed quite this much, the level of maudlin ocean gazing reminds me of this part of the story. <3

I’m involved with little children’s education and it struck me powerfully that the whole thing with Ofsted and SATS was supposed to be for making sure little children were getting a good education—but became perverted
SATS were supposed to show how well their education was being conducted, that was the whole point—but (humans being humans) instead we end up (because of pressures) with little children being taught to perform well in the tests
This means the metric (test results) go up—but the actual thing you’re measuring (a good education) doesn’t—children are taught to test
This is crappy and everyone can surely see that?
Similar thing seems to have happened with AI and the “Turing Test”—Turing was (in a nuanced and complex way) discussing how one might measure artificial intelligence and proposed a test
Humans being humans we have taught AIs to perform really fucking well at the test, but what gets lost is what the test was supposed to measure in the first place
So, yeah—unimpressed by all this Chat GPT
