Lets get to know better the artist Ava Bock!
1. Was there a pivotal moment that made you follow your path as an artist?
When I first joined the Armed Forces, I used art to help me achieve a type of work-life balance. When I transitioned out of the service, Art became my life.
2. What is the process of making your work?
I choose a music playlist to help me evoke the emotional mindset I want to work in, I loosely plan out my general construction, and then I used various combinations of ink, mica, and resin to create my piece. I finish my work off with a layer of polyurethane that I embed magnets into.
3. Describe your work in two words.
Cerebral Aperture
4. What is your favorite art movement?
Minimalism
5. What is your least favorite art movement?
Pop Art
6. How has your process changed over time?
My work has become more about the timing of procedures instead of controlling their effects. This has allowed me to capture more movement and transition in my works. They are also more sculptural allowing for me to consider environments and situations once unavailable to me.
7. What themes do you pursue?
And what themes do you want to pursue in the future? Cerebral Aperture was originally created when I was still a photographer. The idea was about how the mind perceives light and interprets the world around it. Now, as a flow artist, my work explores themes dealing with the perception of time, transition, and connection.
8. Do you have any advice for young artists?
You only have one body/mind, caring for it should be your primary priority. It is better to do something every day for 20 minutes than once a week for 2+ hours. The skills you practice are the skills you increase. Travel often, even if it's local. Make time for yourself every day, no matter how short the period.

London-based Bax makes large-scale sculpture using gestural processes and domestic materials. Here she discusses how she navigates form-based sculpture’s relationship to the Modernist canon, testing limits, creating worlds and the influence of her time as an assistant to Caro.
