'A spirit' Inspired by the Dahomey myth of an androgynous diety 'Mawu-Lisa' Representing life and the elements Mawu – Lisa is in fact a fusion of two gods... Mawu (the goddess ) Lisa (the god). The two deities are regarded as both siblings and lovers merged into one supreme form as an Androgynous spirit. This study focuses on Mawu – Lisa’s nature (androgynous) and its function with life as a spirit of Creation In Africa, the term Androgynous is not often encouraged in the very reserved or traditional circles based on the believe that men or women can’t or shouldn’t have qualities of the opposite sex, yet again an entire culture was based on the myth that an androgynous spirit created the world. Whether or not this myth is true is yet to be proven, the study rather focuses on it as a point of reference and fictional symbolism.
