In 1992 I made a phone call to Koerner Rombauer to ask questions about barrel fermented Chardonnay. Koerner came to the phone and chatted with me for about 45 minutes, eventually inviting me to the Winery to barrel taste and talk more. I set an appointment, traveling up to Napa Valley from southern Cal. Koerner spent over 3 hours with me tasting through barrels, talking fermentation, oak barrel details, timing, character, fruit sources and maturity, etc. That was 26 years ago and it left an indelible impression on me that.....well, this is the result. 2013 started the Mark Nicholas Napa Valley Chardonnay....now 2014 and ‘15 vintages.
