She refused to look at him, keeping her gaze steadily focused on the wall across from her. There was a crack in the plaster that traveled its way to the ceiling, to become lost in a water-damaged spot vaguely shaped like a lopsided Valentine’s heart. She stared at that instead, until her vision blurred and the shape became a blob.
Her night had started out with so much promise, and then he showed up, sans soul, in some nightmarish hellscape she’d dreaded for so long. It was one thing, knowing he was still out there, walking the path of redemption with his soul-curse--it was quite another for him to turn back to this sadistic fucker.
The smell of blood and dust and mildew weren’t enough to cover the acrid scent of the fear she couldn’t hide. The fear, though, spurred on her anger. Anger was good. She could do something with anger. Anger might prove something.
She wasn’t the weak, helpless girl she used to be. Angelus had made certain of that. And now it was time for him to see it.
Nancy’s blue eyes snapped to him finally, unshed tears glistening in them. “Yeah? What’s that? Someone shoving a soul back in you again?” She scoffed, crossing her arms defensively. “Isn’t that how it always ends for you? Just gotta sit back and wait for the do-gooders to get to work on that and you’ll be back to moping in back alleys and shit in no time.” Her lips pulled into a tight smile. “Yeah. I’ve heard all about it. Track record speaks for itself. You never win.”
