There are eight afterrealms in total. Most souls are delivered straight to Yomi, yet exceptions go to Naraka, Oblivion, Folkvangr, Makai or, in very rare cases, Sukhavati.

Folkvangr is a sanctuary for warrior souls which we may call upon in times of need. Once they have served us well, they are sent to retire in one of the other realms, depending on how honourable they have been in life.

Naraka and Oblivion are different realms of punishment. You will only find yourself in these realms temporarily, until judgement has been served.

Makai is a realm where demigods and powerful entities roam and fight one another as though it were one grand arena. Once these souls have lost their power, they may end up in Yomi.

Sukhavati is the realm of divine beings and those who have lived exceptionally honourable lives. You may call it paradise or heaven if you must.

You may wonder about the other two realms, Helheim and Takamagahara. Helheim is an old, retired realm, irrelevant to this conversation. Takamagahara merely serves to prepare newborn and reborn souls.
