“Would you like to be pampered temporarily?”
"Aaah, yes. I told Sara the same thing. There's no place for a bleeding heart here." eyes sliding shut, his expression softens just a little, full lips stretching into the faintest smile. "I know someone like him." the thief says and then shakes his head and drowns the smile with a sip of his drink.
Bucky hears the subtle shift in tone, a note entering the thief's voice that sounds suspiciously like the very sentiment Len had decried just a moment ago. He turns his head enough to look at the other man peripherally without a direct stare, his brows furrowing thoughtfully before he snorts and turns back to his drink, swirling the remnants of the liquid around the bottom of the glass.
"Yeah? Sounds like a royal pain in the ass." He downs the rest of the whiskey and sets down the glass. "Just wanna lock 'em up for their own damn good till the job gets done."
He frowns, an idea starting to take shape in his head.
Cool blue eyes track the movement as the former Winter Soldier shuffles aside, even as Leonard is entirely still himself. When the intent becomes clear, his eyes slide shut and he chuffs a small laugh before sliding into the opened space, half turned towards Barnes with his back braced against the doorframe. "Don't expect any sentiment from me." he says and braces one arm on his angled knee, letting his own glass dangle from long fingers. "Or advice. Sara said enough already." two fingers swirl the air between them. "No changing the timeline and all that."
Bucky chuffs quietly and shakes his head. "Not lookin' for sentiment, pal. Already get too much of that thrown my way as it is without havin' to seek it out."
Steve meant well, but Christ Almighty, could the man hover. Especially right now.
He sniffed, one side of his face twitching up in a brief half-grimace, and nodded.
He'd be lying if he said he hadn't thought about it. About changing it all. All those lives he had snuffed out, everyone he had hurt, everything he had taken from the world... it could all be undone. It could all be set right.
(Memories of his own suffering, his own torture and abuse, seemed secondary to that. He bore them silently and alone, like penance. Sometimes they made him curl up into a fetal position on the floor in the far corner of his room and shake, falling so deeply into himself that he forgot his own name again, but he would never tell anyone that. He would never show anyone that.)
Only changing the timeline wouldn't be right, he had learned. Reality would be damaged, warped, broken-- maybe irreparably. That couldn't happen.
He had argued with Steve for two hours about it tonight. Super-soldier-sized stubbornness. Sentiment. Damn him.
He took another sip of the whiskey. "I get it. We get in, fix what's wrong, get out. Timeline preserved." A muscle in his jaw worked for a few seconds. "Steve needs to sit this one out. Stay on the ship. It'd be best for everyone if he does that."
"Hey, hi, uh, sorry, yes, introductions first. Barry Allen." the jumble of words is accompanied by a sunshine-bright smile and a hand pushed through wild brown curls, while the other is held out in greeting. "And you're Steve Rogers." -speedandlightning
Exiting the Avengers Tower, Steve slowed his pace to acknowledge the greeting. That smile wasn’t half contagious; he found himself beaming back in kind as he reached out to shake the young man’s hand.
“I sure am. Nice to meet you.” He regarded the other man with a mild expression, the remnants of a smile still lingering on his face. He was guessing this wasn’t an entirely social call, seeing as how Allen had clearly sought him out. “There somethin’ I can do for you, Mr. Allen?”
"Actually." Tony answers casually. "I usually don't have to try this hard. But that's okay. I like a challenge. And subtle's never been my thing. Too much room for uncertainty. Any other burning questions?"
"Yeah, here's one. 'Why me?' Way I recall it, this time last year you were tryin' your damnedest to kill me. That also your idea of flirting?"
"So do you actually dance? Real dancing, not 'deliberate bodily harm' dancing."
"Oh, I was all about dancin' back in the day. You ever go to any of those dance halls they used to have?"
"What? You've never been told you're hot before?" He quirks his lips crookedly. He barely ducks a foul ball then looks around. "See? This is why I bring the suit everywhere."
Bucky finishes chewing his hot dog and shrugs. "'Course I have. I was. A long time ago. Things are... different, now." He dodges the flyaway ball by tilting his head to the side, expression deadpan as it whizzes past his ear. A snort and an almost imperceptible shake of his head follows Stark's next comment. "An' here I thought it was because you just like to show off."
