Without him…the bed is far too cold for your taste. Your head is dipped below the blanket, and you curl into a ball. Hugging a pillow close to yourself, you can't help but imagine it was them.

Without him…the kitchen, once filled with the scents of spices, feels dull. Everything lost its saturation, looking grayer by the second they're gone.

Without him…your fingers still stretch out for them in large crowds. Your gaze always snaps to your side for a suggestion. And every single time your eyes falter when those violet eyes never meet yours.

Without him…you were never the best with customers. But you'll try. If it means they'll finally come back and say they're proud of you for it.

Without him…maybe you'll get to bed holding your own hand. It's never the same.

Without him…the days seem too long. Time moves unfairly, and it's like it's been years since you last saw him.

Without him…you spend hours in your bed or staring into the nothingness of the world replaying his voice over and over again.

Notes: Ahhh this is the first time I’ve written in a long time! This game so good it got me motivated again

I crossed the room in three long strides, eyes burning into Asra’s while his own peered back into mine with startled confusion. My steps were purposeful, powerful with agitation, and I spend not a moment hesitating as I clambered onto the plush, royal purple of the sheets that decorated his bed. I was quick to trap the magician beneath me, shifting a leg to the other side of his to straddle him proper, as I curled my arms around his shoulders. Curving my hands around the back of his neck, I held to him as if touch alone would ground me - it always did.

Perhaps he could see it in my aura, painfully bright and erratic in swirling colour, or perhaps he simply knew me well enough to sense my extreme unease, to see the rage of emotion fit to burst in my chest reflected in my eyes. Either way, Asra reacted immediately. Wordlessly his hands were on my hips, thumbs creeping beneath the silken fabric of my pajamas to stroke the skin of my jutting hip bones. His eyes met mine, kind and steady and the swell of love his expression brought to my chest made everything spill over.

Curling my fingers first into the hairs at the nape of his neck, I found myself unable to hold back even a second longer when I felt Asra shiver. My hands slid to his cheeks, cupping his face hard between my palms as my lips pushed down to his. Actions suddenly feverish, the impact hard, I felt the sting on my lips. I didn’t know what I needed, not exactly, but I knew it had to be from him.

Steadying me, hands holding more solidly to my hips, Asra met my needy kisses half-way until I calmed enough to kiss him properly.

His lips were nostalgic, taste of his mouth familiar on my tongue. After so many years together, so many years as lovers, I suppose that wasn’t a surprise. The thought immediately had my nerves on the wire again, fraying at them despite their fragile state, and I found my nails beginning to dig into the smooth, dark flesh of Asra’s jawline.

With no motion of complaint, no hesitance or sign of discomfort, Asra let me take as I wanted. He let me hold him, taste him, feel him beneath me. He moved only barely, somehow knowing just where, just how, to touch to calm me. A gentle hand on my back, the other higher on my waist, squeezing and caressing.

Slowly, I let myself ease into his ministrations, muscles calming as my shoulders and back began to relax. Between the draining jolts of emotion and Asra’s calming touches, it wasn’t long before I was jelly in his arms.

I tugged gently at his cheeks and he came easily, letting both of us fall backwards. My back hit the silken sheets and Asra caught himself above me, hovering close with his elbows pressed into the mattress on either side of my head.

He took the lead then. His kisses were gentle, as if I was suddenly something fragile, precious, as he slowly strayed from my mouth and moved to my jaw and neck. I could feel his eyelashes tickle my skin and his lips were near as soft as they slid across my skin. I realized then, under his touch with his comforting weight looming so closely above me, that I was exhausted. Perhaps Asra knew it too, as his touches were even more gentle than usual.

His lips found mine again, kiss more gentle than any prior. His mouth was soft, coaxing. It lingered on mine until the contact was broken by a sob.

Looking up as Asra shifted, only to find my vision semi-blurred, I realized that the sob had come from me. Even through watery eyes I could see the smile he gave me - soft, comforting, but sad. He hated to see me upset - that much had always been obvious; but he hated for me to keep my emotions hidden away even more.

After the first sob had escaped I couldn’t stop. Asra had propped himself up on his elbows, hands on my cheeks. Gentle kisses to my forehead coaxed me further and I finally allowed the building tears to fall, quickly swept off my cheeks by Asra’s waiting thumbs.

I didn’t know how long I cried - how long I stayed in Asra’s embrace, tears dripping from my cheeks as I heaved heavy sobs. I felt like a child crying so openly, so unabashedly, but despite the creep of shame in my stomach I couldn’t stop. I was like a child, begging for comfort with open sobs and soaking up every bit Asra would give me. Give he would, too, whispering sweet words into my ears and placing tender kisses to my face and temples, wiping my tears and caressing my skin until slowly my sobbing subsided and the tears began to fade.

Giving me a few moments to recover Asra helped my slowly move to sit. I was cross-legged in front of him, shifting until I was close enough for our knees to touch. It made me feel even more juvenile than I already did, but the warmth of his skin against mine, even through the fabrics of out pajamas, was comforting and I couldn’t help but seek it out.

“Now…” Once I had begun to recover, sniffles subsiding and composure beginning to leak back into me, Asra spoke, “care to tell me what has you so troubled?” It was an open question, softened by the way his hand found mine, fingers twining together. His  expression was still soft, gaze gentle. I didn’t have to answer if I didn’t want to.

I considered remaining silent, for a moment. I doubted Asra would be happy to hear my answer. However, I imagined he’d only be more concerned were I to answer by saying nothing at all. It took a few moments contemplating, within which Asra gave my hand a reassuring squeeze, and I finally managed a watery sigh as I began trying to piece my words together.

“I just-- seven years. I…” It had been clear for some time that I had forgotten more than I remembered. I knew, deep down, that Asra and I had known each other for many years - many more than we’d spent huddled together in the shop as he taught me magic in the back room. We were far too in-tune, he was far too comfortable, for that to possibly be true. But somehow, hearing just how long it had truly been, just how much of our time I had managed to lose…

“I don’t want-- to have forgotten.” Pausing as I felt a painful lump in my throat again I fought to swallow it, “I’m sorry.” Asra’s expression was wounded. I had known it would be, and yet seeing his face contorted into such guilt-ridden pain still tugged painfully in my chest.

“No.” I knew he would say that too but even so I readily accepted his hug as it was offered, folding into his arms and wrapping my own around his back as we both shifted to get closer, “It isn’t your fault.” Taking responsibility again. He always did, for everything. A trait that made him endlessly reliable, but still served to cause me endless exasperation. It hurt to see him shoulder burdens all on his own. But, I supposed he often felt the same way about me, too.

It hurt to think that seven years with Asra were gone - that all my memories were gone. But it hurt more to think of how that would make him feel. Seven years of experiences, of passion and love rested in his memory. But in mine, there was nothing but ink spilled all over the pages of memory. Black, incomprehensible - where there should have been shared memories, there was nothing. I could only imagine how much Asra had suffered because of it.

“I’ll remember.” It was as much a reassurance to him as it was a promise to myself. I would remember. I had to. For both of us.

At first, Asra stiffened, unsure. But he eased into my touch soon, pressing his lips to the crown of my head. I could feel his smile as much as I could hear it in his chuckle, breathy and soft.

“You’re right. I’m sure you will.”
