A year into her tenure as Assistant Director of the CUNY SPS MA in Applied Theatre, I sat down with alumna Adeola Adegbola (’15) to talk about how she got here and where she’s headed.-Interview by Michael Wilson (’11) Photo by Nicholas White and Krista Fogle

 You mentioned wanting to share your story. What do you want our dear readers to know?

 My story, yes. I would like them to know where I came from. My mom’s name is Dorcas. My dad’s name is Sunday. Both of my parents are from Nigeria. My dad had every type of job you can think of, while going to school at the same time. My mom was doing the same, when she started working. If you want to talk about money, we didn’t have a lot of it. But my parents were able to make us feel like we had everything—everything.

I take so much pride in that. Because that foundation is about hard work. It’s about making a way when there’s really no way. It’s about love, togetherness. I feel like that’s the foundation of who I am as a person.

 Then fast forward and you’re a student in an avant-garde master’s program. What were the dots in between?

 Well, this journey in theater and performance started in first grade. We did my first play, and I remember we sang Dionne Warwick’s That’s What Friends Are For. I wore a yellow raincoat, and I played a rhinoceros or elephant. My dad stood cheering for me in the audience during my part…it created this connection for me, about performance. How you feel as a person when you’re sharing art like that. I knew, that was it. 

At SUNY Buffalo, I majored in Cultural Anthropology and Theater. I didn’t do the BFA. I did the BA because I was doing the double major, but also, as soon as I got to Buffalo, I was like, I’m never gonna get a part. Everyone was white, specifically in that program. So I didn’t bother applying. But I did direct: we did a production of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf. Like every black girl in college, hah, around the nation! It was such a rush.

As soon as I graduated, I moved to Minnesota. I was an actor-teacher with Climb Theater. We went to all types of different schools, doing skits, workshops, on bullying, conflict resolution. Active listening. One about composting. That job was supposed to last for a year, but I decided to come back in six months, because I was shocked by the demographic. I was always around white people. I was surprised at how it affected me. I started to feel crazy.

 When did you find the MA program, and how?

 2012 when I was back home, working in arts administration, taking acting and writing classes, and thinking about going back to school. I was serious about looking at schools for acting, but then I had a bad experience at an audition, and I reassessed.  There had to be something that connected everything. I remember googling…Anthropology and Theatre? Something like that. And the Applied Theatre program came up. I came to the open house. Hearing Chris and Helen talk about their story and what they experienced, I was like, oh, this is it. It was the easiest decision for me. I applied.

 What was your thesis project in the program?

 My thesis project was about how the media affects girls of color specifically, in terms of their own self-image. That was kind of a given, to me, because at one point I did want to create movies—and maybe I still do.

 How do you bring your life experience into this role, the Assistant Director of the MA program?

 I don’t think there’s a way for me to not do that. I live it. The way I move through the world, the way I experience things—I never walk around not being aware of being a black woman, not being aware I’m from Nigerian parents, not being aware of feeling like I never truly was able to be me without worrying about how someone else felt. Everything comes full circle, to me, about diversity, equity, inclusionary work. That’s the type of work I believe I should be doing, because of the obstacles I had to get over to accomplish anything.

 I know that the program is not a magic wand, and it has its flaws. How are you and how aren’t you able to fulfil on your desire in this role?

Yes. The importance of this work really drives me. The importance of the connection it can make to different walks of life really drives me. So starting from there makes the rest of the stuff just as crucial. You can’t afford to drop the ball. That doesn’t mean being perfect. But everything you do has to be with intention. So I think I strive for that every day, for that intention, for that importance of what that work means in the world, especially now. And how it can look. We can work on showing ways this work presents itself, in different career paths and lifestyles, not in just one way, because ultimately it’s about connecting people. Once you believe that connecting with people is crucial to humanity, what else do you need to know?
