the Joys in Hellenistic Astrology

— Between the first and seventh centuries BCE, astrological literature published in the Mediterranean region often allude to a method for connecting each of the seven classical planets with one of the twelve "houses" or "places." Each planet's connected home was supposed to be the area where it "rejoiced" or enjoyed its "joys." These assignments as the planetary joys system according to Chris Brennan along with other astrologers.

According to most authors, the joys of the planets are as follows:

• The Sun has its joy in the 9th house.

• The Moon has its joy in the 3rd house.

• Mercury has its joy in the 1st house.

• Venus has its joy in the 5th house.

• Mars has its joy in the 6th house.

• Jupiter has its joy in the 11th house.

• Saturn has its joy in the 12th house.

The joys appear to have served as the foundation for a convention in which some of the houses were given names. Instead of referring to these houses by their number in relation to the ascending sign (e.g.,ie: "5th house"), they were occasionally referred to by a particular name. In Hellenistic tradition, the popular names for the houses connected with the Joys are as follows:

• The 9th house is referred to as the “place of God” or simply “God” (Theos).

• The 3rd house is referred to as “Goddess” (Thea).

• The 1st house is called the “Helm” (oiax), as in the helm of a ship.

• The 5th house is called “Good Fortune” (agathē tuchē).

• The 6th house is called “Bad Fortune” (kakē tuchē).

• The 11th house is called “Good Spirit” (agathos daimōn).

• The 12th house is called “Bad Spirit” (kakos daimōn).

The other houses were occasionally given names as well, however they are not directly linked to the Joys because no planets rejoice in them:

• The 2nd house is referred to as the “Gate of Hades” (Haidou pulē).

• The 8th house is referred to as the “Idle” place (argos).

• The 10th house is referred to as the “Midheaven” (mesouranēma).

• The 7th house is referred to as the “setting” place (dusis).

• The 4th house is referred to as the “subterraneous” place (hupogeion).

The names of the tenth, seventh, and fourth houses are merely descriptive of their astronomical position. The names of some of the other houses, on the other hand, do not appear to be astronomical in character, but rather appear to be linked with the planet that is believed to have its joy in each of those houses. The 9th house, for example, is considered to be the home of God, while the 9th is said to be the house of the Sun's joy. Opposite that is the 3rd house, which is known as the Goddess house, and this is the home where the Moon finds delight. Venus and Jupiter, the two benefic planets, are linked with the two fortunate houses, the house of Good Fortune and the house of Good Spirit, respectively. Mars and Saturn, on the other hand, are connected with the two malevolent planets, which are the houses of “Bad Fortune” and “Bad Spirit,” correspondingly. This strong similarity between the meanings of some house names and the astrological meanings of planets that have their pleasures in the same locations appears to indicate a link between the two ideas.

This connection is actually supported by the 4th century astrologer Firmicus Maternus, who writes in the introductory material to his Mathesis that the 5th house is known as the "Good Fortune Home" since it is the house of Venus. Similarly, he claims that the sixth house is known as Bad Fortune “...because it is the house of Mars.” Later in the same century, the astrologer Paulus Alexandrinus referred to the third house as the "house of the Moon," the fifth as the "house of Venus," the sixth as the "house of Mars," and so on. The connection between the joys and the names of the houses is important because it provides us with a crucial piece of information when trying to date the joys and determine how widespread their usage was in Hellenistic astrology.

In order to do this we will assume that anytime the names of the houses are mentioned that the doctrine of the joys is implicitly referenced as well, since the two concepts appear to be intertwined. The pleasures occur quite early in the Hellenistic astrological tradition that has survived. The first datable allusions are found in the works of Thrasyllus and Manilius, two contemporaries who published their works in the first few decades of the first century CE. Following Thrasyllus, virtually every Hellenistic astrologer whose work has survived addressed the joys in some way, either explicitly or indirectly by evoking the names of the houses connected with the joys.

Manilius, on the other hand, is the sole ancient source who detailed an alternate system for the joys, in which Venus rejoices in the 10th rather than the 5th, and Saturn in the 4th rather than the 12th. 11 Unfortunately, because Manilius' text is the sole one with this different pattern, it is uncertain whether his arrangement represents a real variant tradition, an error in textual transmission, or his own unique addition. Various academics have presented arguments for and against accepting Manilius' variation as valid during the last two decades.

All my own observations/opinions! Thank you for all the love on my last post hope you enjoy this one as well ♥ I decided to change the layout a little :)

👱‍♀️Libra risings always have rlly good bone structure and a slim face it’s easy to mistake them for a Capricorn rising vice-versa but it’s their way of approaching people that is VERY different

🚌Sun in the 3rd are usually well known amongst their neighborhood and community! They’re the ones who are cool with the bus driver and make friends with the workers of their usual spots to eat or hang out

🌬Venus in the second may have a very feminine and pretty voice if aspected nicely! Mars in the second may have a more rough yet sultry voice kind of like the girls who do the voiceovers in the back of songs

🤹🏽‍♀️Moon trine/sextile mars people would do so well on reality tv or talk shows! They’re personality and emotions are usually unfiltered and they keep it real so they make very interesting ppl to watch! lowkey also lives for some drama that they can watch from the sidelines/instigate so they’d definitely would be thriving

🎧I have a Pisces moon, Neptune in the fifth, and Venus square Neptune and I cannot live without my earphones. I’ve literally cried over losing them and left school just to go buy new ones and then went home. I would rather go blind then never be able to listen to music again I think it’s always been such a prominent aspect of my day to day life! Earphones would definitely be one of the items I take with me to a deserted island I have no regrets🥴

🤱I’ve noticed a lot of people have the same moon sign as one of their parents sun sign! This parent may also be someone you get along with really well or have a lot difficulties handeling. Most families share a lot of the same signs as well. All of my family has at least one Scorpio placement in their inner planets (I’m the only without a Scorpio moon😬)

🪞Moon conjunct moon in synastry can be really enlightening especially in friendships! It’s like a mirror where you guys are both reflecting one another and you can easily see a lot of your own bad traits and habits in the other person. Depending of the evolvement of both people it can either work as a way to make both parties grow as individuals and form a stronger bond or it may cause you both to enable each other’s bad habits.

🐺Pluto in the 1st may create a person who is easily misunderstood by others and that many may just assume is a scary or rude person just from the way they present themselves. Usually it’s quite the opposite though and most of the ppl I’ve met with this are quite shy and a little timid personality wise!

💣Ascendant square mars may be a person who attracts a lot of violence in their lives. One of my close friends with this is always attracting conflict and violent characters for some reasons. A lot of the times how they approach others and the world around them ignites a very aggressive response in others for whatever reason and it’s usually completely uncalled for.

🌝I’ve noticed natives with ascendant conjunct/trine moon I have very babyish looking faces. This doesn’t necessarily mean chubby or full but they’re features are just very babyish and innocent lookish (pouty lips, big eyes, prominent cheeks)

🎢Uranus in the fifth may signify someone who’s a huge adrenaline junkie and likes to do new and crazy things just because their bored. These people can easily get others to follow their lead too because of how interesting and unique their ideas and ways of expressing themselves are. These people are very magentising.

Random thoughts on Moon signs and why Aries Moon is annoying to have

I saw this tweet a while ago that had a list of planetary placements to die for. The first one was Aries Sun/Moon. As an Aries Moon myself, my response was "Nah-ahhh you DON'T want that. This is dangerous territory, trust me". And then I started thinking about Moon signs, why does Aries Moon suck, which Moon placements are nice and which not so much.

You know why Moon in Aries is bad? Sometimes you see these kids at grocery shops that start crying and yelling and tumbling on the floor because their parent doesn't want to buy them candy (actually, big chances are, they are Aries Moons, but that's not what I'm trying to convey here). As kids they are going to externalise their angry feelings, I mean, everyone's okay with that, they're kids, it's just candy. Worst case scenario, you're just going to roll your eyes at them. But think of an adult who has this screaming, hurt and angry kid inside. It's still there. It won't magically change signs once you're old enough. And yeah, it's going to yell sometimes. And be a cry-baby. And passionately experience every feeling with their whole self, good AND bad. Sometimes it's going to want to scream into a pillow because it's so impatient and frustrated and it just wants everything NOW. Someone on lindaland once said, “you don't have Moon with Moon in Aries, you just have two Marses”. Touché.

Okay but if you want to know something about Aries Moon, know that it feels the urge to be independent. Hates restrictions with their whole heart. Impulsive. Veryyyy impatient, as we have already established. Hates being told what to do. Having constant battle with their emotions. Open and naive (remember it's the child of the zodiac). Very cheery and child-like on one hand but on the other, emotions are expressed and felt in a very raw way, let's say, with a burning passion. Will chase everything. And you can only imagine how an Aries Moon feels when it catches the thing it wants. Likes being the first one in everything. Physical activity is good for their mental health. Kind of obsessed with sex.

Taurus Moon. It's Venusian. It's exalted. It's nice and cosy. It probably has a nice, soothing voice. Think of Elton John, he has Taurus Moon. Beautiful voice but also an eye for beauty and luxury. Can be stubborn in its emotions but hey, at least it's stable, right? It's sensual, just like everything Taurus, and probably loves food way too much. It's in touch with its own body and the only downfall to that is when a Taurus Moon person experiences negative emotions, it affects their whole body. Like, negative emotions can make them physically ill.

Gemini Moon. Ohh Geminis... You know that Mean Girls quote about Regina George "That's why her hair is so big. It's full of secrets". I think of that when I think of Gemini Moons. Like, they just know things. They collect secrets like some friggin Finnick Odair. And they analyze them, probably to the point of brain overheat. So, if you don't want a fried mind, I don't advise having a Gemini Moon. Not that you have a choice, but. They also like to talk. A lot. Love to gossip, just sayin. And seem very friendly when you talk to them. I say "seem" for a reason *whispers* don't trust them.

Cancer Moon. Mushy feelings. The homebodies. The family types. The comfy ones, but not in the way Taureans are. Gentle and creative. Likes to take care of others. Kinda reminds me of sitting with a hot cup of tea and typing poetry into your laptop on a rainy day. Idk. All water Moons are overly emotional but Cancer Moon can be moody and changeable and very sensitive to, you guessed it, Moon phases. CLINGY. You guys are clingy, just admit it.

Leo Moon. There's something about them... It's like the star quality of a Leo but it beams from within, you know? It's like something inside was pushing them towards greatness. They just have to believe in themselves and they will shine. Loves creative pursuits, arts, theatre, music, just anyhing fun. Expressive. Charming. Inspiring. Hopeless romantic. Can be flashy too, it's Leo after all. Wanna make them feel good? Compliment them, they LOVE it and need it.

Virgo Moon. Okay... for some reason I know a lot of Virgo Moons and let me tell you... there's something gentle about them. They're quiet and polite and - this is not a commonly talked about Virgo trait, but - they're softies, you know? But they need work, probably to distract themselves from all the thoughts. It's a lot more focused mercurial energy that Geminis, grounded and analytical. But that also makes them prone to overthinking and anxieties. Can be hard on themselves... so they work even more. And unlike Gemini Moons, they're SHYYYYY.

Libra Moon. Everyone loves them. Ugh the irresistible charm. They're the people's people. Again, it's that Venus. The difference is, Taurus loves to be loved and spoiled. Libra will love and spoil others, they just want to be nice and stuff. And they have an eye for beauty and arts. Chances are a Libra Moon person is beauty and art themselves. Has an internal need for relationships. But it's air so has a tendency to intellectualize these relationships... and everything else tbh. Great communication. Social.

Scorpio Moon. They straight up give me the creeps. My sister is a 0° Scorpio Moon so I KNOW. Don't get me wrong, I love Scorpio Suns... but Moons... It's like the water of the water, the over-emotional ones. Kiiiiiind of simmilar to Aries in the sense, that they feel emotions A LOT but it's not straight-forward like with Aries. Instead, it's pushy and passive-aggressive and manipulative, not very trustful and secretive. OH MY GOD, so secretive. It's just intense.

Sagittarius Moon. Ahhhhhh my favourite. And I don't think I say it because I'm Sag dominant... Sag Moons are just FUN. They exude FUN. Their playfulness and cheerfulness comes from their heart, that's why it's so special. Thinks and feels big. Big hopes and visions, maybe too big sometimes. Aries and Leo are focused more on the self, Sag on the other hand, is focused on the world - the actual world or a fictional one. Loves movies and is probably a bookworm. Philosophical. Optimistic and lighthearted. Kind of a dork - whether an adorable or annoying one lol.

Capricorn Moon. I'm sorry but ya'll are just depressing. I have Moon square Saturn so I kind of get the vibe. I feel like having a Cap Moon is like having something squashing you from the inside; very withdrawn. It's cool if you get to work, and Cap Moons can be workaholics and hard workers... But if you give into that hermitism (yea I just made that word up) and get lazy due to... things... or being too overwhelmed by that Saturn energy, you get squashed, basically. Also, fears and lots of reservations. I feel like these guys have issues with that. 

Aquarius Moon. My Aqua friends... let me tell you. They're not necessary weirdos, as people say. But they are humanitarians at their core. Like, THEY JUST CARE. So that makes them sensitive. But not in a watery way. Can be veryyyy aloof and hard to get to. Will probably intellectualize their emotions and try to detach from them. All about people but not like a Libra. Difference is, Aqua wants to be independent. Expressive and intelligent. 

Pisces Moon. My favourite water Moon. It's dreamy and soft. Yeah, a bit flakey, but let’s NOT talk about it. I feel like Pisces Moons just get emotions. They understand them because they're all about the collective. That makes them empathetic. Intuitive. Romantic. The artistic types. DAYDREAMERS TO THE MAX, they’re in another dimension. It’s like sometimes you talk to them but they’re somewhere else. Prolly loves being near the water, it's like the sea is calling them. May have escapist tendencies.

🎯My Astrology Unpopular opinions🎯

(Cause why not)

- Genderfied and sex based astrology only serves the writer’s narrative. “Men x are y” and “Women g are h” doesn’t have place in astrology. Astrology includes the feminine and masculine energy of signs and people, not the physical being of female and male.

- Don’t predict people’s appearance with astrology. It is very annoying and at times insulting. In extreme cases writers mention skin color, which I don’t know how in the hell can you predict someone’s race by their birth chart.

- Similar to the previous point, don’t predict someone’s sexuality and gender identity.

- I actually love light hearted astrology like astro notes. I do love the deep, long, informative and at times dark work of people but damn I can’t read that all day everyday. People go through enough everyday, the last thing they need is to read about how they’re going to die alone because of their Pluto.

- I don’t care for synastry and composite charts and most of the other charts like Draconic and what not. Persona and Tropical is where it’s at.

- Although I do encourage people to search and read more about astrology (not social media posts and videos, but actual sites and books), it does not make your work and ideas any less than.

- Astrology is not a promise for anything but rather an insight on what could be. Just because you have indicators of success doesn’t mean you will by sitting and doing nothing. The same thing goes for fame, family, money and love, it’s a possibility that you choose to work towards not a life guarantee.

- Lastly, and I will shut up, you don’t have to be spiritual to enjoy astrology or develop an interest to it.I love astrology for it’s social, psychological and scientific aspects. Which apparently is heresy. According to some not all.
