Azul is not available.
Some parts of the facility are quiet. Soft scratches of pen against paper, padding of feet against the tiled floor, nothing to make you snap your head at any sudden movement.
You keep note that the air doesn’t smell of disinfectant as most hospitals would. Nothing too white, too beige nor bland. There’s a hint of home, someone’s home but surely not you, it’s compared to a castle the more you make a left and right. If you weren’t stalling, you keep skimming through your files, wondering what expression you should make to radiate friendliness.
The marble floor hypnotizes your senses, disinfect slowly shifting to a more salty smell. It’s not fishy, not exactly, and certainly nothing too strong but enough to notice the sudden change.
You realized the area is you've entered is around the pool room. Your patient likes to swim, that’s nice.
A tall man stands in front of your patients door. It should be your patient, but by seeing his uniform of pristine white, you take a guess it could be his caretaker. There’s a loud crash inside that had you freezing on the spot, your shoulders slightly tensing as you listen to the shrilling shriek from within.
Worry fills you entirely, nearly dropping your belongings as you rushed forward. A arm stops you from touching the door, knocking you almost back if it weren’t for their quick grab to your collar.
“Hey! Why are you stopping me, what if he’s hurt?!”
The man’s grip on your collar tightens, your frustrated expression melting at the sight of his face. The air felt much heavier, the face that judges you, challenging you, feels suffocating that you suck in a breath. He’s still yelling, crying as the last bits of objects are gone in silence.
“Let go of me! Shouldn’t you be his caretaker, why did you leave him alone?”
Your eyes catch onto his name tag; Jade Leech. Bit by bit, your fear overcomes as you focus on the sniffles from behind the door. Jade releases you, his frown turning upwards that made you question if you were looking at the same guy. He places a hand over his chest, turning his attention fully towards you out of respect.
“I am. I apologize for the confusion, Azul didn’t like the meal I had prepared for him today, it’s not wise to go in when he’s having an episode.”
You take glances at the door, brows furrowing as you purse your lip. Embarrassed at how brash and loud you reacted. But it’s unprofessional to not apologize back.
“No- I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have overreacted…he was just screaming and I thought the worse while you stood there…”
For some odd reason, it’s difficult to meet eye to eye. Besides the height difference, his small smile and demeaning pupils feel fabricated. A part of you feels as if he’s judging once more.
“There’s no need, that shows you have a kind heart.”
He beams, rows of teeth peaking from his mouth with the light of mock. It’s your first day, let’s not.
Jade doesn’t move from his spot, his arm stretches behind him, a hand grasping the door handle. A sign he wants you to part for a while. Azul did make a big mess.
“I understand you’re here for his appointment, but Azul is not fit to have a session until he’s properly eaten and I have cleaned his room.”
You grimaced. But straighten your posture as you give a firm nod. Your fingers curl around the edges of your folder, tearing your gaze from Jade and awkwardly staring at the floor.
“O-ok. When can I come back? I don’t think I can squeeze in another hour before my break.”
“Hmm, it won’t take too long but I’d hate to cause trouble for your schedule on my behalf. Please, I’ll let you have a rundown on your patient.”
Surprised, you waved your hands up in an attempt to seize his offer, shaking your head slightly as you weakly protested.
“Oh, I don’t— I already have information on him-!”
“Azul tends to overeat once stress, this can trigger the smallest of things such as misplacing or arguing. But he likes to swim to let off cool, have him count though checks, that works as well. Azul will also try to throw up his meals once he realizes he’s overeating, that causes a toll on his health. The last one didn’t get that much information..so I doubt that little folder of yours tells you everything about my sweet patient.”
His chattering is smooth, really smooth that you’re actually focused and interested. It snaps you back when his grin widens, not liking the way his eyes creases and narrow slightly. The rows of sharp, shark-like teeth as you swallowing as you clench your own. You are a little concern about the last sentence, but it’s true some people aren’t just fit to talk and walk through with the mentally ill.
“Thank you. It means a lot that you’ve told me this, I can now get closer to him!”
Jade chuckles naturally, giving you a smile that finally covers his teeth.
“Oh, don’t thank me yet. You have so much to learn than a few facts, I suggest you think them over. I trust Azul will be great in your hands. Now please, excuse us.”
You turn to leave but jerked after remembering you didn’t have an exact time. Jade’s expression blanks for a moment at your hesitation, before returning.
“The night. It’s better…if you scheduled Azul at night, he’s more active then.”
Night shifts. Scary. But also a demanding, not every other doctor or staff takes the night shift. You’ve obviously volunteered, during the weekends you take night shifts and weekdays the mornings.
“Right. Again, uhm, thank you—“
“Jade. Call me Jade.”
Shoulders hunch down into near submission, what. You bit your bottom lip and nodded, hardening mentally as you squared up a bit. What is the matter with you, his stupid voice is hypnotic plus his crazy stare.
“I’ll see you around, Mx. [LN].”
Hastily, you pull away from the conversation and check your watch. This had been going for a good twenty minutes, you would have to entertain yourself until your next destination to another wing of the asylum.

Azul likes to study his doctors. He has a way of easing them, prodding at things he shouldn’t.
He slides against the door dramatically, streaks of tears tasting salty on his tongue as he glares at the door. His cheek pressed, ear piercing the sound of Jade’s gradating voice. Jade did it on purpose! Azul had specifically told him not to give him a large meal, he’s doing it to tick him off and it’s working. Azul swears his caretaker is a man-child, petty and annoying, he’s just had enough with that oversized eel.
“Azul. I know you’re against the door. Move or I’ll kick through it. That’ll be kind of funny actually.”
Azul clench his teeth in frustration, slamming a fist into the door but that only serves to harm him. Cursing softly under his breath, he wobbles when he tries to stand, pushing himself up by leaning against the door for support.
“You may think this is funny, I’m not eating this. This isn’t balanced, are you trying to raise my blood pressure!?”
Jade enters the room without responding, closing it behind him as he adjusted his gloves. Scatters of the food, fried and savory, now ruined and crushed.
“There’s nothing wrong with treating yourself you know? Take it as my apology for our little spat.”
“You’re not even trying to hide it!”
Careful not to step on any glass, he leaves Azul in his own space as he gets to picking up broken pieces. Don’t want him getting any ideas since his last doctor disagreed about anything he had to say. Azul curls up, not wanting shards cutting his skin, the whole ordeal was done in silence as Jade tidied up.
Efficient as ever, it takes him a good fifteen minutes to finish with a garbage bag filled to the brim and a sanitized room. Azul mindlessly chews on his bottom lip, somewhat regretting throwing his meal, but the thought of eating it makes him sick.
Jade kneels down to Azul’s eye level, tilting his head as he held out his gloved hand towards him.
“Throwing a tantrum isn’t like you, but it is my fault for teasing you so. But we’ve wasted good time, not mine luckily, time otherwise. Mx. [LN] was here to see you, I’ve discussed another time of meeting.
Azul’s brows creased in irritation, taking his hand either way as he glares at him for his sneaky insult. Azul isn’t deaf, he’s heard it all even through his shouts and gagging. It’s a miracle he didn’t throw up his breakfast that Jade had made him eat in bargain.
“Wasting my precious sleep over…that? Hah!”
“Don’t be like that. It aligns with my schedule, I can finally keep track with you and Floyd. Yeah, won’t you like that Zuzu?”
“Don’t call me that!”
Azul’s fingers grip Jade’s wrist, the leather protecting him from further damage. If Azul despised anything, it’s the baby talk, Jade just knew how to get under his skin. But doctors as well. He’s been to plenty, seen and spoken, business people who are honest and a hoax. Azul had driven out more of his doctors out of pettiness. He’s not a baby. He’s not, he’s smart and knowing!
Jade laughs. Giving a sharp tug and gently taking Azul’s wrists. He’ll make him a different meal. Balanced with veggies and protein, not the crispy, golden brown of fried chicken he knows he couldn’t resist forever. It’s funny to watch him get upset.

You set up a reminder on your phone to remember your makeup appointment for Azul. You did a little digging on some of the other caretakers schedules and what works better. Different patients require more attention than others, some active during night than morning or are booked.
Rook Hunt at exactly four fifteen, then lunch break. You could hit up Riddle’s caretaker for a check up if he had gotten his medication, get to know your employees…
Ten minutes maximum to go to another section of the asylum to find your patient, you couldn’t wait until your room is ready so the patients are brought to you and you don’t have to run around like a chicken. Rook was reported to be last seen outside the facility and in the garden.
The garden is beautiful. But far too large.
