Japan Unveils its Highly-Anticpated Next-Gen Fighter Prototype
Japan has just rolled out its ATD-X technology demonstrator/prototype. Check out a few pictures of the aircraft in the link!
The Mitsubishi ATD-X is Japan’s first foray into the world of 5th generation fighter aviation, already dominated by the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II. Though Japan had originally wanted to purchase the Raptor, which is widely regarded as the most advanced multirole fighter in existence, en masse, an export ban put in place by the US government prevented that from happening.…

The ATD-0 will finally makes it's way to Ace Combat Infinity in the latest update.
TBS-1 recently put on a program about the ATD-X. Besides for the fact that the prototype's paint scheme is pretty damn anime, there's not much new info, but it's kinda interesting in a droll "lol Japanese politics" sort of way.
Like, the narrative of the segment is pretty much "yeah, America kept us down for so long, but now we're finally developing a state of the art fighter for the first time since that war that we don't like acknowledge happened." It barely even tries to be non-partisan. At one point the reporter actually asks "has America tried to interfere with the program?" (The answer was "no," but an incredibly evasive "no.")
I mean, developing the thing might be the right foreign policy decision in the long term, what with China and all, but it's still a bit disturbing. Neo-con Japan is not something I particularly want to see happen. But then, I don't exactly get a say.
The Japanese users in the comments section of course have no such compunctions, and are going at it pretty hard. As tends to happen with videos about any piece of military hardware.
Also, I like how ステルス機 totally sounds like "Stealthski." Honestly, that'd be a better nickname than 心神. Though I'll give you pretty good odds that once this thing goes into service, the pilots will start calling it "valkyrie."
